My brother is lookin at a 1981 22' Grady Cuddy.

The boat has an I/O that was rebuilt 3 yrs ago(not a Mercruiser)

Outdrive was also rebuilt more recently.

New canvass and good electronics.

No trailer.

evidence of an oil leak in bilge.

Reverse is tempramental.

have it from reliable source that other than mentioned problems the boat is good.

He's paying $5,000.....what do you think???

ahh so it is a mercruiser those are good Sure Io's are more maintence but if the price is right , she runs good and the Stringers arent rotted nor the deck rotted or softspots, could very well be worth it.. One thing Ill add is you got be carefull with old boats they lose thier value in most cases to the point you cant even trade them in & your puttin $ into something that has no value, good builders are often exempt from this theroy and the boats are often restored and worth buying..ex. Bertrams, maybe grady, formulas, some Chris crafts ect..

Yep,the outdrive is Merc anyway.......forgive the niavity but does that mean that the engine has to be as well? Cause he is not sure.
Interestingly......the seller is buying a new boat and was going to just trade the Grady in.The Shamrock dealer was gonna give him $5,000. Then my brother expressed interest and the guy said "what the heck" gimmie $5,000. This is one factor that kinda makes me think that this might be a steal.

Trade in doesn't mean anything. They may give him that but will make up the difference with other items on the new boat, such as frieght, prep, bottom paint, etc. Go to NADA Guides.com, which is the Kelly blue book, and look for the marine tab and put in your info. It will give you High and low retail. 5K for a 22 year old boat is very high especially with that outdrive.
Keep on looking.
