You can only own one rod and one reel for all your partyboat fishing needs. Just one – I know that’s insane, but if you could only have 1 combo what would it be, and its got to cost under $150 bucks.

I’ve picked the Penn Squidder\Squidder Jr. and a 7’ Daiwa SEA LINE rated 12-40 and 1-4 ounces.

Jigmaster HMMMM

I'm a big fan of the Jigmaster but I pick the Squidder(and I like the idea of extra spools) because I though the Jigmaster a bit big for fluking and weakfishing in the bay. I don't understand why so many choose the GTIstseries over it these days.

I'll also need a better description than "cheapo" if you want to lay claim to having designed the ultimate low budget combo .

Cheapo means anything under $40 , Its true a little big for Fluken and Weaken in the bay . But you said only one rod for Partyboat Fishing . That means I have to cover all bases . You did not say bay fishing only . Now you got ocean fluke , bluefishing , bassfishing, seabass , cod , Blackfish .... Great reel to jig with . You can even cast with them .
Out there you little reel might not be enough .

I Think that one reel would cover all the bases , with the extra spools .

NOW do I get THE PRIZE ?

By the way I have an older reel thats a Penn that you can remove the side plate to change the spool , a little smaller then the jigmaster but the same design . Don't know if they still make them though .

7' Daiwa Sealine x boat rod SL-XB661HR with an Okuma Convector CN-30L for $75+ $70= $145. Just 5 dollars short of the budget. It is what I am using for the party boat. To save even more money I would use a 7' Shakespeare Tiger rod for $60.

Hey Mate

Excuse me Mr Mate, can you take your reel of the rental rod so that I can put my cool Newell on it - not.

Come on - stick to the rules. Trying to find out what is the best value in rods and reels.

Partyboat is a little broad too. I mean cod and stuff - lets not include that crazy deepwater cod and tuna and sea bassin.

Good Arguments for the Jigmaster

Good arguments for the Jigmaster and I agree you can take cod with it. The quick take apart is also a great feature. Very reliable - good drags. Though, I might argue that one of my favorite sea bass and blackfish reels is the narrow squidder - but no denying it really isn't a cod reel. How many cod do we usually catch on "non specialty" bottom fishing trips in this area lately?"

I'm still sticking with the narrow Squidder as my best budget reel for partyboat fishing in our area.

Hey Mate the name is Jackson

For the money I would go with an ugly stik tiger with a diawa sealine. I have abused these rods since i was a kid and they held up just fine. In fact, I wipped over 36" inch bass on party boats. I you decide to choose a squidder you may find the retreive a bit slow for jigging.

Seeker BA85-7' $110. The other $40 will buy you a used Squidder, Jigmaster, etc. on eBay. IMO, the BA85 is about the most universal off the rack party boat rod around. I've caught everything from porgies to cod on mine...

For the rod, I'd go with a Pete Mania musky rod PM72HT from Bass Pro Shops. This rod is 7'2" rated for 20-40# line and 2-10 ounces of lure weight. It's listed at $89.99. As for the reel, I'd opt either for a Penn Jigmaster or cruise ebay to see if I could 'steal' a quality reel such as a Penn 310/320 Gti.

Stick with the squidder... my friend uses it for fluke/ porgies/blues/bass everytime we go out on party boats... the reel is powerful i've seen it bring up blues up to 18 lbs without much difficulty and its perfect for fluke. The gear ratio is slow as jackson points out. It is something around 3-1. But my friend has used it jigging blues and again NO problems.

Sorry Guys,

I thought about it and realized I can't
do it! Too spoiled with my custom
rods and fancy reels. I can't picture
myself toggin' with an Okuma. I do
like the Ugly Stick blanks though. They are worth every penny. Also, the Abu Garcia 6500C3 series reel (with power handle) is a very versatile reel. I've never used it for tog but I have caught large bass, weakfish, fluke and slammer blues with it and never had a single complaint...and it runs about $80.00. Paired with an Ugly Stick of
your choice should keep you under the $150.00 budget.

Whaddaya think?

This may be taking this thread a little off-track, but I'mm looking to pickup a good multipurpose boat rod/reel in this price range. I've owned a Penn squidder before and have been very pleased with it so the reel is set. I'm leaning toward the Diawa Sea-line rod but am curious as to which model you pros would recommend. Here's a link to the different models:

Any advise is appreciated.
