Just curious guys, approximately what does the 240HP 4LH-STE Yanmar burn in lets say a 26 Fortier ? Also wouldn?t mind hearing any experience, opinions or advice concerning this engine. Are there things I need to lookout for, is there anything in particular other than what is scheduled in the book that I should do concerning maintenance, etc, etc. I'm all ears.

I had that engine in my 28 foot T-Jason at about 2800rpm I used to burn about 4 gallons an hour. If you look on the Yanmar Website there should be a chart for that engine that shows fuel burn at given rpm's, and my experience was the chart was right on.

Thanks Pete, appreciate the info and I love your new ride as well as the old.

That particular model Yanmar was not on the site, although I suspect the newer LH motors are going to have identical fuel burn as they are the same 3.4 litre blocks.

I looked at the website and looked at those charts which show a fuel burn more than what the limited amount of owners I spoke with told me they burn. For instance you tell me that at 2800 RPM she burns 4GPH, but this chart shows it burning a little over 8 GPH.

This is the reason for my post lol, I'm trying to get good and accurate fuel burn data on this engine, in addition to a general opinion of this motor.

I don't remember burning that much at 2800 rpm. I know I did a shark trip 55 miles round trip, and I used 24 gallons of fuel, that would come out to about 8gph. I would say that is a solid estimate. The previous estimate must have been what I averaged a day between a little running, a little trolling, and a little idiling. It was a good engine and I know of a lot of other guys that are very happy with them. By the way Pete is my brother, this is Tom. Good luck.

PRO!

The Yanmar 240 HP 4LH-STE was by far one of the sweetest diesels ever made. It was identical to the 370 Yanmars which also sported a great reps. Do to EPA however it is no longer made. I strongly endorse the purchase of any vessel sporting this fine little/BIG workhorse.

On the maintenance end: Anti freeze changes annually, zincs should be checked every 80 hours, Valve adjustments, nothing tricky, Raw water impeller and bite of a challenge, oil, turbo washing. Nothing that is very difficult.

my "4gph" that was in my northern bay was more like 8-9 . but the speed ratio was still there

I checked my log book, and like I said I averaged 4 GPH for my trips, again that is a little idiling at drift, a little trolling etc, in effect a normal day fishing on the water. How I came to that number is after 10 hours on the hour meter I would normally need 40 gallons of fuel.

Straight running at 2800 I'll stick with the other estimate of 8gph.

Both averages were consistant when I sold the boat with 500 hours on the engine.
