Craig, if you check out the NY posted reports, you'll see that splnew fishes the HH quite often, and I'm sure does pretty well. But I agree with him, $135 fare, $20 pool, tips and fish cleaning $$, make it a pricey trip. Splnew, have you tried Walshs?

Like everything else, fishing is getting expensive. Never fished the Yankee Fleet on the day trips, but I have sailed on the overnighters. They are much more expensive, but when things are right you more than get your moneys worth. I consider the Helen H to be something in between a day trip and an overnighter, time wise. The price is high but the fishing usually justifies it.

I have fished on the Yankee Fleet three times this winter. Great group of angles on board but I was not too satisfied with the crew. Being a mate on a boat myself I can appreciate a great crew. Fishing was good all of the trips. I took codfish up to 15lbs on all trips. If you are looking for a gangbuster trip go on the Helen H. I try to fish the Helen H a couple of times a year but all of my trips have been canceled this year due to the weather. The mates are spectacular and the fishing is even better. My buddy and I average 80 plus fish a trip when we go. The boat cruises at 20 plus kts and the yankee clipper is a tad bit slower. If you can take the time and the money fish on the Helen H. If not the Yankee is a good choice. I wish I had more time go fishing but school is killing me.....

It should also be added that though the Helen H trip is much more expensive the biggest plus may be you can keep as many legal cod you can catch whereas on the other boats although the fare is about 1/3 ( $45 ?) you can only keep 5 cod/haddock in the Gulf of Maine and 10 after April 1.If you're really lookin to stock the freezer and give fish away the Helen may be the way to go. I have never been on either boat but seems the Yankee Fleet would be the logical choice for a day trip since they are centrally located in Gloucester and can fish Stellwagen, Jefferies or Tillies. Splnew- thanks for your reports all winter - you are truly the man! I am going to Stellwagen in April - will report results.

helen-h 3/15

decided to cancel yankee and go with helen-h. fishing was a++ this time. fish were hitting steady through the day on jigs or bait, with bait working a little better. saw some nice fish to 20 lbs.not as many small ones.

Yankee Fleet

Splnew, that was a good decission. I sailed on the Yankee Fredom, Saturday, 3/15. I believe there was 5 keeper cod caught on the whole boat, largest 3.5 lbs. I won the pool with a 4 lb wolffish, my only fish for the day. This was my first try on that boat and was sorely disappointed. By the way I am not sure the Yankee Clipper sailed that day since we left it at the dock with engine trouble.

yankee clipper

I was one of the unfortunate souls to be on the clipper on sat. 3/15. The starbord motor was not firing. After 45 min. we were finally underway but only on one motor. Captain had it started momentarily but it made weird sounds. Any way we did more exploring than fishing. I caught 3 cod with two of them throwbacks. For a sold out trip There were only 7 keepers (cod) and 2 wolffish caught all day. A pretty shi**y day. Did very well with them back in October, but I guess sometimes it's just not meant to be.

Andy Lynn- Plymouth

BB- Does he run open? I thought he was just a charter? I have sailed to Stellwagen several times aboard a private boat from Plymouth and it always seemed that the Andy Lynn was always on top of the biggest piles of fish out there. He has some nice lookin boats in his fleet with decent speed -would love to get on board if he is running open or taking individual resv.

Andy Lynn

Talked to Patty of the Andy Lynn boat. In addition to their charter boat, they also run a 65' headboat. They were looking for anglers to line the rails. I think the fare is $55.00. Give em' a call for more info. 1-508-746-7776

You want a ride or fish?

Guys in my eyes if I am going to drive 4 hrs. or better i want fish not a boat ride. The Helen-H is the best boat for the job up there besides a private charter!. Also a key fact is the waters where the H fishes does not have the 10 fish bag limit! So if you want fish and a good crew you pay for what you get :).
There is a reason why for everything and the Helen -h is a proven fishing boat in my eyes. :).

Thanks RB - I will defintely give them a call to check on dates they are going.$55 bucks to fish Stellwagen - you cannot beat that- sure beats payin $150++ per man for charter when you get to keep the same 10 fish on either boat.

Mass regs.

A mate on the Yankee Clipper stated the cod regs are 5. You can also keep another 5 haddock. So you can potentially keep 10 fish as long as not more than 5 of them are cod. If I understand correctly, either April 1 or May 1, you will again be able to keep 10 cod so hang in there.

Andy Lynn has two head boats...for the price you cannot beat going out with them. Capt andy is a great guy and a great fisherman. The boats is clean and fishing is usually very productive. He has kept trips out longer than he should have when the fishing gets good. It is a fishermans boat..You can get on the boat any time but the cabin doesn't open until the mates get there. I had my best day for haddock on the boat. I highly recommend the boat.
