I was surprised to learn first hand that the cod limits for the commercials in the Gulf of Maine was 500 lbs in the round plus 25 lbs of fillets for "personal use"for each crewman on the boat, for a 6 man jig crew that is an extra 150 lbs of fillets that gets sold somewhere plus we fished the 19 inch length limit which ment nothing went back. This makes the 5 fish limit at 23 inches for recs during the winter a real joke.
Codkiller, they are making a living...Nothing wrong with hook and line commercial fishing, it's the draggers you should worry about. Even if they were allowed twice that amount of fish, it's a tough living. Remember, there is a lot of overhead. I guess you went fishing with Tim.
Now, do I agree with the 5 fish limit? Absolutely not!!
I agree nothing wrong with commercial jig fishing, I'm just pissed at the 5 fish rec limit and the way it was pushed by the commercial guys. I have fished a couple times with Tim on the Petrel and loaded the boat both times with the right fish.
