Last years season was cut short due to a quota that was reached because of our 19 1/2 in limit. We all know this year it's been tough with the new 20 1/2 in limit. Will the season close on Sept 1st or will it be extended so the so called quota will be reached??

just wondering what everyone's else thinks???

It would be nice to go a few more weeks maybe even.

I don't think it will be closed given the small catch thus far this year especially with a lot of PBs not targeting them as much as they used too. Hopefully the data will be public soon.

It would be an early X-mas present if they extended the season. However, I don't forsee an extension given how much the quota's been surpassed in recent years.

Write or call your elected officials and tell them that we, NYS, have to go out of compliance. Other States have done it and it is NYS turn to take a stance.
The press release last year stated that we had over fished and gone over our guota and that is why they took our open season away from us. Yet, more and more evidence is showing that we are indeed closer to our targeted number than ever before. We have not over fished so give it back. This year has been devastating to many and to allow us to fish till Oct. 6 would give some much needed relief to many. Oct. 7th the council meets so if we go back into compliance than there is no penality.
COME ON NYer's STAND UP AND BE HEARD. GET EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO CALL YOUR LOCAL ASSEMBLYPERSON OR SENATOR. CALL SENATOR SCHUMERS OFFICE AND TELL THEM WE NEED HELP! GIVE US BACK WHAT YOU TOOK AWAY FROM US LAST YEAR!!!!

Didn't the ASMFC pass a motion last year that required paybacks in any fishery for the fish a state catches while it is out-of-compliance? I remeber the motion but I don't remeber if it passed or not.

FLUKE SEASON CLOSING

Unfortunately, I think it will close on 8/31. Since when does the State of NY give anyone a break. Lets get out as much as possible before then and catch our quota, lets give the PB/Charter guys a shot in the arm before its over. Good Luck........Kevin R

Fluke Season Cut Short ?

I've resisted asking the question of whether or not the season will be
cut short this year. I didn't want to jinx it, but now that
you've asked...

I wouldn't be surprised if the season is cut short again this year.
As many here have observed in various threads, it doesn't seem that
the powers-that-be need legitimate reasons for their decisions.

Personally, I'm satisfied with this year's fluke fishing. I caught
more keepers in the bay early on in the season than lately, but
there are a lot of fish in the bay, indicating that the fluke
population is pretty strong. That's reassuring, considering all the
doom and gloom propaganda by the fisheries management to date.

On the brighter side, I think the strict regulations have made all
Fishermen more aware of the battle for fishing rights. The importance
of fishing, to all of us who enjoy the sport so much, has been made
even more clear.

Thank God the recs don't have to report their landings like the comms do. If we did, the season would have been closed already! With the #s and size landed in the last three weeks, we are probably way over already!

The regs state the season closes on September 1st. So does that mean at midnight of Aug. 30th is the last time you can catch a fluke for this year or does it mean you are allowed to fish for them on Sept. 1st and it closes at midnight that night? Sept. 1st is labor day so trying to plan out the weekend and wasn't sure if I can catch fluke or not. Thanks.

September 1st starts at one second after midnight. (9/01/08 @ 0000:01 hours)

Any fluke caught after that would be against the regulations.

The open season is shown as May 15 - September 1st on the DEC website. So, I take that as open on September 1st (Labor Day) and closed on September 2nd.
