Why is it when anyone see's any fish being caught anywhere, they feel the need to post a report?

Are you guys fisherman, or are you report chasers who can't figure fishing out for yourselves?

Please be honest with yourselves, if you can't find fish on your own, stop fishing because the best part of surf fishing is finding your own fish and or spot.

You wanna share with people how you caught it and what you caght it on please do, but why do you have to say where? Why not just say I was fishing a ledge that went from 8' and dropped down to 15' and the fish were stacked up on it. Instead of telling people where to go direct then to what to look for when they are out fishing.

Thanks I needed that...

Been catching loads of fish myself and not one report.. in fact I think the number of surf reports is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY down as most of us have learned that silence is golden..

I think you're wrong about this and some publications like the LIF have been giving out spot specific reports since day 1.. pick one up and read about when and where right there.. here though, I haven't seen any mention of where the fish really are in the surf, as I've been catching regularly in some spots that I have yet to see in any publication and especially this site..

If you look hard enough you'll see the ones doing the catching are not posting anything.. and I kinda like that even though I myself am a fotrmer poster.. and will not post anymore as the amount of access we have this year is at an all time low for sure..

TJ - this has been argued at lenght on more threads on this board than I can recall. If you get a little time, try using the search feature above and do some searches on "spot burning", "report chasing", "posting reports", stuff like that. Favorite winter time topics

"favorite winter time topics" LMAO Rich...

And don't believe everything you read.. I remember one "member" who used to post fake reports just to laugh at the report chasers who show up with thier darters at 12 noon..

It's taken a lot of angst and effort from those members who frequent this board, but I do believe that it has resulted in everybody being more aware of the possible impact that their actions may have on others. This is a good thing as it makes this board a more informative and less stressful place to be while allowing each and every fisherman to pursue their passion in their own manner.

Isn't that what the posted report was designed to do?

Every now and then I post in the Posted Reports section.Whether I catch fish or not. I feel this site was to help others so everyone can get a little enjoyment out of life. I mainly Surf fish and most of the time I let people know where I fished. I don't believe in the word "Spotburning". It's a big ocean and fish may be at a site one day and not the next. You have the right to express your concerns and you've done it.I admire you for posting your thoughts. If the Posted report section is so irritating to you,Don't go into it.

lets say you found fish at this place that will only hold 3 people...you killed them 3 nights in a row..some guy or yourself post a report exactly where you where and there are 5 guys there the next night...ya ok you wont be mad ....lesson learned for me silence is golden..but the occasional brag is fine with me just dont expect a specific location...

well maybe its just me but i hate seeing cars in parking lots hehe

I dont fish the suds at all. And I understand when someone gripes about this, especially on the beach where structure and access is limited etc. etc. I personally think the most fun part is finding the fish somewhere out of the norm....on your own. But guys, nobody owns the beach. Anyone can go there any time with as many people as they like. First come first served I guess. Of course we'd all be a little upset if someone else was in the spot we frequent, but thats when you go hunting and find another honey hole to work. It really ticks me off when people flip out about people being in "my spot". its a double edged sword, on one hand you want to share with people how you made out, but yet you don't want anyone there. I say catch your fish, dont tell a soul, and everyone will have all the room they want. Just pray that nobody happens to SEE you catching fish somewhere and decides to give that spot a try.

Wil you are not alone when you smile at empty beaches.. especially when you caught them during the last tide and nobody knows.. I used to post often, but after all the negative comments and the fact that no one shows up the next day makes it worthwile, don't get me wrong I read the reports too, but after fishing for years I've learned patterns.. one good thing to do is to look back at past years like some do.. I enjoy the reports and feel guilty sometimes not posting, but with this shrinking access (by the day) surfcasting has almost become a "criminal" act in the minds of law enforcement.. it's a shame but now you have to "sneak" around in the night dressd in black and walk far to avoid the parking tickets.. but then to advertise on the 'net that fish are biting in one of these VERY few spots will increase the traffic there and that nobody wants..

Nobody owns the beach? Tell that to the people who think they do and the law enforcement that is always there.. fishing from the surf has become a crime especially in places like Brookhaven where I live.. like you said.. Nobody owns the beaches, but the tickets say otherwise.. it's a shame what has happened to this great Island of ours.. Our access is gone and the few places that are open are overun..

I always love when they ask you "Do you HAVE to fish HERE?"

I hear ya man, its a real B*** to get to the beach and fish, and its really unfortunate. I think you misinterpreted my comment though, I was referring to us fellow fisherman not owning the beach....not the police (who we all know own everything). This topic is real catch 22 and it could go on forever.

Problems w/ access

You can refer them to the Coastal Zone Management Act which allows for all citizens to areas of shoreline lying between the mean high an low water lines.

I was fishing about 200 yards down the beach and beyond the fence that clearly stated private beach. Of course by the third cast some snotty woman approaches me with her efin Southampton Sun bonnet (call it what you will) and tells me this is a private beach and they don't like fishermen being there. Her reasoning and subsequent threats:

1.beach is in back of her private community/house
2.fishermen always leave hooks that her children step on
3.can't you fish somewhere else (as fish are breaking directly in front of us)
4.you're trespassing and I'll call the police

My response:

1.Are you aware I have the right to be between mean high and low water ANYWHERE I want? Oh you say I accessed via private land so that is illegal? You would be right Ms SH bonnet but I jumped off a public jetty to get there rather than jump you erosion fence. Oh and BTW Ms SH bonnet I know a **** of a lot more than you about Coastal zoning and mgmt so please call the cops as I will have them laughing in your face by the time they are through with you.

She walked away, stunned, and I fished another 3 hours right in front of her landing five keeper Bass and over 20 Blues.

tournyboat you are right and I've scared many a rich ahole away with the same statement, in fact I know when I am parked legally with one of my many permits that they have no power.. I simply tell them to call the cops, They don't they know the rules but try to scare people away anyway.... and ieven when they do call the cops, I love the look on thier faces when the cops tell them there is nothing they can do as I have the permit

Love that. But then you get the ones who decide it's M-80 time and that is a real buzzkill as I know I'll be in jail after that knee drop to thier temple....
