Because if you don't some of the MANY people who have fished there in recent years will end up in many of your favorite fishing spots making them a bit crowded.

The math is simple. Tallman's Island water Treatment Facility was visited by 100's of fisherman every year. Now the public has been kept out, denied access. The pier existed available to the public for decades and generations of local fisherman enjoyed the spot. In recent years many more fisherman from other areas found and used the place partially thanks to this website. The place became too crowded, the people didn't clean up their garbage, and now we have no more local spot to go fishing any more.

Now these people will most likely start showing up in some of your favorite shore spots, and your favorite places may start to seem a bit crowded. HOPEFULLY they won't abuse those places too!

SO everyone PLEASE, support the reopening of Tallman's pier in College Point, OR lend your support to the building of a new fishing pier in the town of College Point Queens. This way, everyone may have a chance to help preserve the places that you all love to fish. Loosing public shoreline and fishing access is a constant fight for us all. This is an important topic PLEASE don't ignore this. Petitions will be available to sign in all of tackle shops in the College Point/ Flushing area shortly!!!! PLEASE put your signatures on the papers, they will be submitted to our local political representation. As well as the Department of Environmental Protection, and the NYC Parks Dept.

A Boat Dock Is No Place For Kids

I wouldn't call Tallman's, a Pier. It's a dock, a dock for boats to load and unload. They can not and will not put railings on the Main Dock no matter how much you cry, period.
A high-up platform with fast running water below plus the absence of railings would be a Death-Trap for younsters or even adults. I would feel really very sorry if someone fell and drown because I was a part of the cause.

Interpreted as: If you don't sign my petitions, I will open the **** GATE and send you the Poachers and Trashers.

BTW, please do not threaten us to get what you wanted. Thank you.

I feel bad for you and all the people who lost access to that fishing spot.
But are you helping yourself? Do you belong to any fishing clubs or anything like LIBBA to help fight for your access? That's were you should begin. Also, did you ever talk to the people who leave the garbage? Ask them to clean up? Do your own personal cleanup of everyone else's garbage? if you don't chip in why should people who don't fish there bother to help you.

In the areas i fish ( long Island) I help with organised cleanups every year, and do my own cleanups on most every fishing trip and plenty more just to get outside near the water, hey im there why not make it positive.
Good luck with your quest

Pier? boat dock? Is the difference so imortant?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, it doesn't really matter. the quest is underway to either REOPEN the dock to the public OR have NYC, or NYS build us a spanking new fishing pier. which one happens is not of the utmost concern, as long as ONE of the scenarios occur.

The fact is that Tallmans has been beautifully renovated with rails around the entire pier, as well as gorgeous street lights along it's entire length. It would be fantastic to use that dock given these fantastic and ideal additions as well as it's old proven fish catching structure and location. It does NOt mean that an equally magnificent pier couldn't be built in another location near by.

The wheels are turning in spite of anyone's negativity, will just have to see where they land when all is said and done. I don't EXPECT miracles, BUT NOTHING VENTURED, NOTHING GAINED. Since i don't see anyone else making the effort to benefit this community with a fishing pier, (which the community well deserves), I'll do my best to see if I can help make something good happen.

Instead of trying to be a road block with your negativity, why don't you join the team, and come aboard for the big win? Thanks!

Once again thanks Sam for your positive input.

Public toilet. the tide rises and falls there twice a day. the river current runs with constant intensity, and this was said basically in your own words. No one is asking you to eat fish from a public toilet. No one even wants you to ever set foot there, much less fish there. You and your negative opinions are insignificant. In fact please do us all the favor and NEVER show up there. Stay in the wonderful places that you call your own private paradise. I'm convinced that that would be the best possible way you could ever lend help to this Sam. to each his own, enjoy your wonderful fishing life Sam, and let us enjoy ours. If we WANT to fish in the public toilet, it's our business. Many of us here in this town have happily done so for decades. I'm 42 years old and still don't have cancer or any other diseases to my knowledge. Nor do those people that I know who have fished that plant dock along side with me. We honestly don't make a point of eating what we catch there, most of us catch and release or basically catch our bait there. Also not to forget that all of the species that we catch there a migratory, not resident year round inhabitants of the area solely. But trying to introduce real reason to an individual like yourself is obviously a futile exercise. Thanks for your input, but honestly it's not appriciated. Like I said, we're interested in trying to do something positive for the community. The building of new pier is a more likely solution to the situation. I expect the reopening of Tallman's to the public to happen less than actually obtaining a new pier. We'd still be happy with getting back in to Tallman's too. It was always good enough before, it will continue to suffice if that is all we can get monitarily. We're all very happy to be able to fish there. It's a fantasitic spot that never fails to produce and produce well.

Who cares if it a dock or a pier. It's a matter of access.

If you see a poacher, open your mouth. If you see garbage, pick it up. If you see vandals, call the police. I would bet you don't. It all too safe to anonymously gripe about it than have the nuts to do something or confront someone.

Stop bitching about what has been going on and get involved. Otherwise sit back, as you obviously have and lose another area that you were able to fish at.

Wait until they build condos or co-ops on the site someday.

I myself approached people about the garbage and the poaching and the only answer i got on that dock was a NO ENGLISH (with a smile)! The DEC was contacted numerous times and acted accordingly. The trash, the dock is about 30 yards in the river and with no protection from the wind most of it(plastic bags.etc.)gets blown in the drink.
I wonder if the DEC played any part in the decision for no public access. (To stop the poaching!)
I wish we had a LIBBA in N.Y.C.

Thanks to those of you with positive things to say,....

Your optimism and support is very much appriciated. I'm glad there are other that are with me who clearly realize that something needs to be done.

The wheels are turning, so we'll see where this may get us. I've dropped petitions for all those interested to sign at the previously mentioned locations.

Fisherman Depot : 127th Street and 18th Ave in College Point

Pro Fishing Tackle, Northern Blvd, Flushing East bound side 1 block east of College Point Blvd.,

First fishing Tackle Northern Blvd. and 150th Street Flushing NY

Aside from that, I agree with the guys who said that fishing clubs on our side is another positive influence.

I also agree with doing cleanups. I have done them on my own at times when i fished on the dock, but one man alone couldn't make much of a dent. An organized cleanup is another very intelligent and productive idea.

As for poaching and vandalism, you can only call up on someone when you wittiness it. If I were to see it personally I have NO PROBLEM making a phone call. I happen to be an officer, not a DEC officer but a NY State Peace Officer never the less. I'd be happy to to make a phone call for the right circumstances as a concerned citizen. No body wants to see the environment violated, Or our fishing spots vandalized.

The whole point of an organized fishing pier is that there will ALWAYS be someone present to maintain order and make the proper phone calls when necessary. Especially to take care of the sanitation issue on a daily basis.

I sympathize with your plight. If you post that petition on here I will sign it. I hate to see anyone to lose their fishing spot. I too deal with alot of garbage leftover at my local spot. There are garbage bags but it is up to us fisherman who care to clean them up or take them away and replace them. My suggstion to you is maybe try and contact the powers that be and suggest putting up chicken wire or a screen on the lower portion of the railing to keep the trash from going into the water. Just a thought. Good Luck.
