There is a law against the pots being placed within a mile of a fish haven in local waters. In the case of the Ab reef, the reef itself is 3 miles out, making it federal waters. Out there, if you notice, there are pots on the North side of the reef. THat is the reason for them being so close. The worst part of the fish traps, is that they put a female fish in there, she attracts hundreds of males, after the pot is emptied, they put her right back in. She is the black widow of Blackfish. Those pots must go.

From what I was told, the reefs are off limits within a mile of the structure. The Ab does have pots, and they are just off the north side of the reef. I thought the offshore waters were considered different, thats why those pots are atthe Ab. If anyone can clear this up for me I would appereciate it as well. As for pots in general, they wont go anywhere unless the laws change, making them illegal altogether. Even without the live fish market, there is still a demand for the fillets here in the states. Pots are the highest producing method for the commercials, so they would still use them. I hate pots more than any other commercial gear, it is rapes the bottom of all life in an area.
