I was thinking of exploring the possibility of catching some white perch in my local estuary/tidal creeks. I haven't tried fishing for them in Dec/January. Any of you white perch (actually a white bass) experts out there care to weigh in on the topic? Some specific questions:

1 - If I am successful in a tidal location back last year in March, is it a good bet that there should be white bass there over the next 4 to 6 weeks, active and biting?

2 - Is the fishing generally better, the same or not good in late winter when compared to early winter?

3 - Are there any suggestions as to tactics or locations? I fish the tidal section of the Carmen's and my go to lure is a 3 inch power grub on a 1/16 oz. jig head.

What do yeah say???

Thanks

2 things even though they are tech in the bass family they not a white bass two diff fish . And yes they are more active in the late fall early winter because their enviorment is also more active and they are feeding up to make it through the lean winter months. i find them closer to the brackish to salt line this time of year as upposed to further upstream in the spring when they have spawning on their minds.

Thanks for the reply flounderjoe. I always thought they are white bass.....they look very similar to freshwater white bass. I'm a scientist and always curious about the environment and of fish species. Can you elaborate? Can you point me to a scientific reference on the different species? Thanks

White Perch

White bass=Morone chrysops

White perch=Morone Americana

What we catch on L.I. are all white perch.

One of my favorite fish to target in the cold winter months.

There is a TON of great information in past threads with the use of the search feature. If you can't find what you are looking for, feel free the ask away....

Good luck !

Had them good in several different locations last week...Some jumbos in the mix too ! Have not been out since.

Gitzit was the jig of choice....

As it gets colder, half a crawler on a jig-head and grass shrimp will come into their own...

Good luck !

"Any nonspecific general area? "

Sorry I missed your question...

Tidal creeks of the South Shore. Have had fish in a few different locations, so they are around. Even had them pushing small spearing on the surface on a sunny day before this cold-front pushed through.

Good luck ! ;)

They're brackish water - water that is both salt and fresh. I used to have them by me up until Irene or Sandy, then poof, gone. Very light tackle, small worms or grass shrimp would work for me. Hold your rod if you use bait, they are master bait stealers. If you search in older threads you can see some spots that have produced well in the past.
