Planning on putting a pot hauler on this season; it will be electric. Intended use is just taking the work out of pulling my 10 pots and it may double for hauling anchor and a bait gilnet.

The only model I see commonly is electradyne, however there are other haulers out there which are less $$ and might suit my needs better.. I just don't know much about them..

Does anyone have any reccomendation on haulers?

Thanks,

Jon

Leaky,
Years ago I worked with my buddy who outfitted his C-hawk with a Electradine hauler for pulling traps, we would pull 200 traps a day and I don't recall ever having a problem with the hauler except it would get a bit slow when the battery wore down. It was a clean and simple set up which worked really well for the purpose.

I also thought about putting one on my 26 fortier to pull some pots. I was told it was a bad idea because of the hard chine on the boat. I was told that when pulling the gear, over time the warp would chew the heck out of the boat. It made sense, so I never did it, but often wondered, what if.

Nice boat Sushi.

Hi Jon, I have the Electradyne 3/4 hp model and think it is great. I did have to rebuild the motor once in 8 years. Not a fault of the motor just used it to haul my anchor (100 fathoms) several times one day and didn't know my battery was nearly dead. Full amperage is the key here. As you can see from the pic. i have a Hard Chine boat also. that davit you see was about a foot longer but broke it off when i was hung down. As you can see the Davit is portable and fits into a rod holder. (Strong rod holder) it is made from 1 1/2" EMT. (electrical conduit). Pretty "Down and dirty"

Bren, I have one just like that but it would take to long to haul 100 fathoms and you would have to tend it. with a conventional hauler you just start it and feed the line and let it haul. No hands.!! With a Capstan you have to hold pressure on the tag end.

In that pic. my hauler is working and Dave is sitting there watching it fake the line down.

On the subject of cheaper models, there are all sorts and some even mount to a downrigger holder and have a built in davit.. hard to say what really is right.

Sounds like Electradyne is the sure bet. As far as a Davit, yep that is exactly what I'm thinking except for I've got some heavy walled 1.5 inch aluminum pipe I plan to use. Just need to do the machining/cutting and a buddy will weld it up for free. Main concern is building one that is long enough to keep the line off the boat but also can be stowed in a reasonable manner, boat is a 5 lb bag with 10 lbs of **** in it to say the least..

The boat is not a commercial style at all, it's a 26 ft. walkaround cuddy with twins and a hardtop, however it's got 8 90 degree swivelling rod holders that would probably rip the boat open before they gave out. Will put a removable solid pin in one of them for the Davit.

The reason this came up now is I found a good deal on a block; wanted to get my hauler figured out before buying a block that I may not need.

How much pressure will it take. Say I have 3 pots on a trawl, @ 40#'s each plus the weight of the wind and the current on the boat is that coming close to 200#'s, I know sometimes it sure feels like it with 2 on a trawl. Maybe its partially due to the scum on the line factor too. Also will the little hauler actually be able to power thru the scum and seaweed or will it just slip with the small drum size? I dont need it for hauling anchor just for tending pots once a day. I know of one comm guy that huals with this type

That might be the ticket. It looks like a decent hauler for the $
I dont know what I'm going to do, probably nothing. Maybe I'll just make a block and davet and haul by hand and see how that goes. As long as I can keep from going in the drink
I'm doing good thanks, saving my ching for another fun filled year, cant wait to go sharkin
