Fished the KP Bluff tonight, and they were hopping out all over. I've read that there are lots of "Hickory" Shad out there this year, but last night, I know I caught a schoolie bass (about 16" released of course) and 2 ****tail blues, and 2 others that spit the hook ...

Tonight, on the way in, someone at the dock said they were all Shad... I said with razor teeth? So, I came home, looked up Shad, and could swear I caught a couple 17" blues... am I crazy (this person first asked me how to measure the fish, but then he and his son had 2 stripers in the boat, so I figure he must know what he's doing)
So... who'll back me up here, were there Shad, Blues and Schoolies all in the mix? or was it ALL shad?

Second question, he said he was live lining his Shad, and that he used a treble hook so they couldn't do something... I read here that to live line, you use a different method... could anyone give a quick "live line" lesson...

Thanks,
Richie

Sight unseen I can't say for sure but there have been a lot of small blues (almost snapper size) around the FI area so I wouldn't be surprised if you had some small ones up your way too.

For the live lining I like to use a single hook though some prefer a treble. For bass hook the bait in the nose, head, or at the dorsal. For blues hook it nearer the tail.

Good luck.

Live lining Shad

I've had good success with live lining shads. I usually hook them through the nose or from the bottom of the jaw. You will be surprise at the bass that will attempt to inhale a 12-15 inch shad. Very effective method.

LIBBA,

For what it's worth, both WADER and myself have caught ****tail blues in the mix. You are 100% correct. Last night especially, the schoolie bass were mixed with the shad and with ****TAIL BLUES. Shad DO NOT have razor teeth.

Seems like each day there are more and more blues and less shad. Another two weeks and the shad will be seeking more salty water.

Thanks for the info...

Thanks for the info guys, didn't want to head out last night because of the rain that never came... and tonight I'm tied up, but soon I'll try the live lining shad... I know it works, because I've seen the results, but wasn't sure exactly how to go about it.

A lot of the fish spit the hook on me because I crimped the barbs... fun trying to bring them in, and doesn't harm the fish as much, but makes it a little tougher getting them in the boat ;o) still, most of it is for the sport as I hooked up with at least 4 schoolies that were returned unharmed to fatten up for 10 years and the same with the blues...

Thanks again,
Richie

Ive been live lining shad and bunker by : sliding a fishfinder onto my line then snelling the hook .I use the hook to punch a hole thru the roof of the mouth and out the top of the head. Then I attatch the fish finder rig in the hole, leaving the hook to dangle about the head.I find the bait to last longer and makes it easier to CandR. I forgot,I use mono leader for this,24in,to a spro barrell swivel then tied off to my line.
