Sand Shark Belly

One of the best baits I ever used was on a Party Boat the "Apache" out os Sheepshead Bay. On a trip when someone had caught a small Sand Shark and was hooked so deeply and Bleeding so badly it would not have lived, the mate cut me a few strips of the white belly, it was so tough I used it for the rest of the day, and actually got better as the day went on

I was mateing on the Commodore out of Island Park, and the best luck that I ever had was taught to be by an old timer. He rigged a double hook (like a flounder rig) with a strip of fluke belly. He constantly jigged the bait. At the strike, give some line and set the hook. A sure thing!!!

The best bait is anything a big fluke decides to eat at the moment. My favorite is fluke belly and porgie strips. As far as frozen bait goes,I like 6 to 8" smelts which are available in markets in the spring.

Recently, I had a great day using snapper chunks.......my favorite, due to availability remains strips of sea robin and spearing.......funny though, I thought I could take this deadly combo out to Montauk (the Lazybones) and show them a thing or two......and the combo bombed out! I quickly changed over to thier squid & smelts

It all depends on location and time of year. Using a bait that the fluke are keyed into is the best bait. Whole squid early in the season, snapper blues when they are abundant, sand eels, tinkers, etc. They all have their time and place. My personal experience has been that silver bullets are deadly early in the season and almost worthless at the end. I have no "favorite" bait.

I've done well with a strip of sea robin belly (meat still on) on a plain jig head. Tough as nails. Fish seem to like it even better after a few chew it up.
