Grinder

Nice rig. It looks like you have a very large port strainer plate. Have you tried to grind any 2-5lb blue fish with that plate? I am fortunate to have a very very large grinder from a meat processing house that was given to me. The rig is great for macks but when you grind blues you must keep cleaning the ports.I made the mistake of buying 500lb of mack and 150 of blues and ended up cutting the blues by hand before grinding. Took me forever, especially since my buddies were mysteriously absent. Generally I get about 1000lb of mackeral when they are cheap and grind them with a mixture of Menhaden oil added at intervals. We try to only us sea water to clean the rig as we grind . We have a concern with chlorine tainting the slick. Lot of time and expense but it seems to pay off.I have several leftover buckets which I plan on using next month out of Nags Head, NC. There is supposed to be a great Mako bite that follows the king Mackeral migration. My friend, who lives there has som friends that Commercial KingFish and will let us know when the Mako's arrive. I'll keep everybody posted. It should be a simple trip, all I must bring is teh chum. Can't wait! I am so tired of shoveling snow out of the boats, this wa sthe third time in 2 days. Good luck guys, you'll be getting hit with the stuff pretty soon.We got 25"so far and its still coming.

its homemade

it's an old "mr. chummer"" i just put a 1/4 hp. electric motor on it and the pullyes
it will grind up a small blue like up th 5 lbs.whole, but the bigger ones i 1/4 them and take out the backbones and head but the little one's go right through
dont know the size of the ports but you can fit a finger in them
where "junk" chum is about 35$ for 5 gallons this thing really shines

Grinding

Originally we started to grind chum to save money.WE also used to sell fish (legally) to supplement the costs of the trips. As the econimic situation has improved I no longer sell anything and have changed my permits to reflect this.I am a Ditchdigger not a Waterman, my relations with VA watermen is great since I declare who I am. Anyway, since we are particular about our chum contents and use it heavilly our success has been consistent.Mark

Grinders

The source I have used for parts was Hobart. The manufacturer will sell direct to a consumer. Thanks for the info.Though. Check out Allcoasts Sportfishing, go to swords and sharks under discussion board. Neat story about a 500+ Mako. Mark
