For the time that you fish, how many skates can you say that you got in those years and when doyou think is the best time of the year to get big skates?

Hello ErnieP

Wow? I never expected this question, but here it goes.
I generally use lures but on a very rare occasion, I will catch skates. However, whenever I chunk for the elusive bass at said hole... that's when I will encounter those feisty critters.

Unfortunately I never kept a record of how many skates I?ve released (who does?). For the record, my most memorable skate was caught back in September of 1996 and it was a giant skate (over 100 lbs.) culled near the Sore Thumb / Fire Island Inlet!

In all honesty, I really never paid close attention to this fishery?maybe someone on this board could elaborate!

I've caught many, many skates this year on the North Shore, but very few on the south shore. If they are of decent size (more than 18" wingtip-wingtip), I'll keep them and let my dad go to work... The most catches have been between September and the end of October. Since the end of October, it has been really nice to have a fat blue and not a skate on the end of the line.

They yield a decent amount of meat, and the meat is tasty. And sometimes when you go to the super market fish section and buy those tasty sea scallops, you just might be getting some cheap skate..... :)
