I have an 8.6 St.Croix that I really like. Light enough to cast for a long time, long enough for some reach. I have an 11' Penn that casts further, but it is very tireing so I dont use it nearly as much. The 8.6 St.Croix is a great compromise rod, I even use it on the boat sometimes to reach in around the rocks at Old Field Point.

custom all the way

If you're considering paying top dollar for a rod go custom. Get it from a reputable builder and it will outlast and out perform any factory rod. The factories just can't spend the time on each rod that a builder will. They will also cut corners on material if they think they can get away with it. No custom builder worth his reputation will build a rod with anything but the best components.

p.s. I wouldn't want to meet anyone who can cast a 12' Ugly Stik all night in a dark alley.

surf rod

ok so I have an ugly stik and I love it. I am a nice guy and meeting me in a dark alley --well no worries hehe. Just had to post a reply, the ugly is heavy--granted, but I feel confident that if I need to really haul on a fish I can. If I need to put a lot o muscle behind that rod, it will take it and ask for more. hehe :)
