what kind of fish is in the pictures? it was caught in Jamaica Bay last weekend while surfcasting...it was a nasty thing....big head, cross between sea robin and sea bass, with teeth...and a purple tinge in its tail....was afraid to touch it - is this a stargazer? is it dangerous/unwise to touch? thanks

thanks for the responses....was told by captain of reputable partyboat that it can be a dangerous fish...you can blow up if get pricked by one of its spines, etc.

anyway it looked too suspicious to me so we were trying to be careful with it....

Northern Stargazer.

They do produce a mild electrical current but the venomous spines are really what you should watch out for.
