We have seen photos of dolphins and other wonderful things while out on a boat, either fishing or just cruising around. Today, we have seen it all, while drifting out in Ambrose Channel by buoy #4, I was starring at the horizon, all of a sudden I see this bird with a huge wingspan flying low over the water, realizing it wasn't our ordinary Sea Gull, it came closer and closer ,heading for the boat, the next thing that happens, is that the bird makes a swoop and lands on the top rail mount of the boat. I couldn't believe what I witnessed. It turned out that this huge bird of prey was a RED TAILED HAWK. What were the chances of this happening? Where did he come from and where was he going. He stayed on the boat for a couple of minutes, just enough time for us to take a picture of this magnificent Bird of Prey. After he rested up, we watched him fly off to the North. For us, this wasn't our ordinary day on the water.

Wings,

That is absolutley awesome. What a thrill it must of been. The closest that I come come to that experience is several years ago I was headed east in the bay from moriches bay towards shine****. I saw some activity on the surface and slowed down to see what it was. Out of nowhere an Osprey swoops down and picks up what I believe was a ****tail blue. Wonderful experiene watching these birds in their natural environment.

You think that’s strange?? Obviously you haven't caught a glimpse of my ex-wife floating around on her double reinforced blow-up raft wearing her floppy straw hat and oversized Marilyn Monroe sunglasses while sipping her Pina Colada out of a coconut with an umbrella in it! Even the Whale watching boats slow down and take pictures!

boats n birds

Great picture, thanks for sharing. While surfcasting by Oakland Beach in Rye at night, I heard something tap the chain link fence that was literally 2 feet behind me. As I looked over my shoulder I had a big owl perched on the fence which proceeded to spend the rest of the night watching me fish. I suspect the owl grew fond of eating all the left over bunker that fisherman left to rot on the rocks. I've also witnessed a small bird of prey pick off a sparrow that was hanging around our 6-pack charter out of Montauk. - Frank

My Week for the BIRDS

Today while heading out to Ambrose Channel we saw what looked like a dead seagull in the water, we took a look and it wasn't moving, but something just didn't look right, then we noticed that the bird moved, trying to fly, we scooted over and used the net to take him out of the water, covering his head with a towel, got him in the boat and saw that he had a YO-ZURI jig (with 3 treble hooks) stuck in his beak, his wing, and his foot. We gently removed the jig and after a close inspection saw that he was fine. He hung out with us until he re-gained his strength, got up, flew into the water and after a few minutes of flexing his wings, took off and we watched him fly to the beach. I really don't like SEA GULLS because they eat the baby duckies all the time, but we just couldn't leave him out there with a jig in him. With my luck he'll find me and poop all over my boat as a THANK YOU.

DEER!

That's right... DEER!

The first time was about eight years ago, FIVE MILES from Montauk point! A six point buck was swimming after a doe that was heading towards Block Island! I thought it was so weird until a historian at the Lighthouse told me that deer swim the 12 mile run from Montauk point to Block Island ALL THE TIME!!

The second time was last year at Eaton's Neck. I have no clue where the deer started her swim, but we watched her swim the last hundred yards to the beach under the brushpile!

leaping sunfish

While trolling about 12 mi SE of Moriches about 30 yrs ago, sea was like glass, not a ripple. We came upon a large body of Mola mola (sunfish),there must have been 30 or 40 of them covering about a square mile, I had never seen a large grouping like this before. We were startled by a huge splash about 100 yds from the boat. while we were trying to figure what could have caused it a sunfish of about 400 lbs launched himself about 6 ft. into the air and landed on his side flat on the surface. it sounded like a gunshot and sent up a geyser of water as high as my flying bridge. we hung out for about 20 minutes and this behavier continued every couple of minutes throughout the school. Up till that time I had no Idea these slow lethargic creatures could generate enough speed to ge airborn.

Looks like I'm not getting very far offshore this year, so I'm living vicariously through stories. Though I haven't spent any time with red-tail hawks lately, I have seen some cool things offshore.

I saw an Oceanic White Tip about 60 miles out. Didn't realize it was very rare at the time.

We saw two whale sharks, at different times, come right up to the boat while chunking at night. One was 30+ feet. These guys are really cool.

In an area about 1 square mile, near the NA, we saw 4 Leatherback turtles. Each was about 6 ' long. We tried to swim with them, but they were extremely fast, and skittish. Just saw them swim away into the deep. I though this was bizarre, but the water was loaded up with jellyfish.

We almost ran over a Humpback whale at 35mph. Looked like a freaking sea monster!

Saw a 6' tuna jump a few feet from the boat while cruising. No idea what kind.

A couple of sharks that looked to big to be real - no ID.

Found a Mahi with a sea turtle for a friend. The turtle was his floating structure.

While hooked up with a YFT, a dolphin (mammal) just hung , almost motionless next to the boat and watched. Almost had to shu him away when the leader came up.

I now try to remember a camera, and actually take it out!

...mocean

Oh, also saw what must have been a submarine wake, and from the bay, a Polaris telemetry test way out on the ocean.

The weirdest thing that happened to me was while fishing at the Cartwright grounds for blues, this small bird (i believe it was a sparrow) was soooo tired, he landed on the tip of my fishing pole!! I couldn't believe it! He then flew to the bow and was there for sometime before flying away. Poor guy had a 5 mile flight ahead of him!

Manta Rays

While on the way to the Cholera last week, we spotted what looked to be some fins breaking the surface and stopped. It turned out to be huge schools of rays with perhaps 3-4' wingspans and they swam right under the boat. Snapped a few pictures, but they are so well camoflaged from above that you can't see them unless they break water. Look closely at the pic and you will see wing tips breaking the surface. The big patches were schools. We had a run off about 5 minutes later which spit the hook. It would have been a shame to hook one of these. On the way home, we saw what looked to be a small whale or a large shark, but couldn't get close enough to make it out. Amazing what you can see on a clear day. Thanks for sharing your pics with us guys.

Yesterday morning my friend and I witnessed baby blackfish about 6" in length leaping out of the water near the 2nd Wantagh bridge. We then noticed they were being chased by decent size stripers. This went on a few hours during the outgoing tide.
