I think the boat got stuck on a sand bar. Dont know exactly how the adult member of the party died but the kids were rescued. I believe they were clamming.
This whole labor day weekend was a wash.
Not a good idea to be on a boat, it was pretty windy out there.

Stroy is true from news 12

09/02/02) WANTAGH - A day on the water turned tragic, right near Jones Beach on Monday. According to Wantagh fire officials, two boys and their uncle, James J. Errico of Freeport, were clamming when their boat got tied up in the marshes off Goose Creek Island.

The boat suddenly broke loose, and when the uncle tried to swim after it, he went under. Rescue crews were not able to save Errico, but the boys were rescued after an hour-long search.

"One was treated by Wantagh Rescue #3, and transported to the hospital with hypothermia, said Assistant Chief Robert Nicosia of the Wantagh Fire Department. "The second was brought in by Nassau County Police Harbor Launch, at which time they were transported by police ambulance."

The two boys were treated and released from the hospital
