Guys, I'm pretty new to fishing and for the short time that I have been, I've been using monofilament line such as Fireline and Stren Original fishing line. I usually fish from the surf on a pier for blues/stripers and i'm currently using Fireline 14lb test. Getting the fish over the pier is a hassle already but the casting range with this has been great. I'm thinking about getting Power Pro braided 30lb test, would you guys recommend it for me? Will the casting range be just as good? If not, what do you think is a better option? Thank you.

It's NOT mono, Its F I R E L I N E. Fireline is a "thermal filament" superline. Braided lines are also in the superline catergory, but Fireline is not a braided line either. The Berkely rated 20 pound test Fireline actually tested to break at over 50 lbs.

As eisey stated, Fireline is not mono. In my opinion 14 lb anything is rather light for the salt and with the thin diameters of the braids, there is no reason not to go heavier. 30 lb PP is a much better choice and you won't lose distance on your cast as compared to 14 lb mono.

Some of you may remember a post I put up about a year ago about Power Pro "parting". Since then, I have switched over to Berkely Super Braid, and it has been fantastic. Casts great, I don't get wind knots, and if doesn't seem to "part" like Power Pro. I use it both for the beach, and the boat.

With the fine diameter, I use 50Lb from the beach, no issue with being able to muscle a nice fish onto the beach.

Ive been useing P-line (cx not cxx which is stiffer ) #30 on my 10'6' St Criox with a larger Penn and #25 on a 9' lamiglass with a smaller penn..P-line is a copolymer core with a fluro coating so it has most of the benefits of fluro but the core gives you close to 100% tensile strength on your knots.. It has 40% less strech than mono so hook setting is easier and it has low memory so line twist is eliminated not to mention its diameter is thick enough so I can see it and handle it better. And even though its made in Japan , you can pick up a 1000 yard spool for about 25 dollars

Braid is awesome! Everyone has their preferrance. Mine is stren super braid!lol As far as breaking strength, i would go by what the rod you're gonna swing is rated for. Don't put 40# braid on a rod rated for 20#. Good Luck!
