about 30 years ago a large ship caught fire near the Verranzano bridge . What happened to that ship ?

Various American maritime firms expressed interest in salvaging the stern sections of Sea Witch. It was finally towed to Newport News Shipbuilding?s yard in Virginia. All spaces forward of the engine room deckhouse were cut off and scrapped. They were replaced by a new fore body built at the yard. Converted to a Jones Act U.S.-flag chemical carrier, it was renamed Chemical Discoverer and still sails today as Chemical Pioneer.

The Sea Witch was originally built as a bulk carrier, but was converted to a container ship before delivery. I surveyed a sister ship, the SS Argonaught which was also damaged by a fire while loading containers in Egypt.

The bow section of the Sea Witch sat in the Brooklyn Navy Yard for years. I believe it was removed about 1985 or so. You could see the giant notch cut out of the bow where it locked into the Brussels and all the schorching from the fire.

I remember it well, had a birds eye view of the verrazano from my roof top in Brooklyn, remember seeing alot of smoke and the middle of the span being darkened from all the smoke and fire

I have lived in Bay Ridge (its the Brooklyn side of the Verazzano) all my life but have never heard the story. I was only 3 at the time but would have expected to hear of it growing up. Interesting stuff.

Thousands of brand new automobile tires were on the ship and were floating and picked up by anyone lucky enough to be there.
