The first time I took my son on a boat, for Blackfish in SHB. He was 8, scared to death that I'd walk away from him and leave him standing with the strange guys on the boat.
The first good fish comes over the rail, he asks if he can go look at it, and dissappears. When I find him, he's up in the wheel house on the Captains lap getting a lesson in electronics! Instant party boat fisherman for life......

My favorite trip was this time we were fishing for fluke. I had the handle on my reel break off, so I didn't fish for half the trip. I was helping him. He looked at me and says "I'm 10 I know how to do it". He did too. He outfished me, (I didn't have a rod) and the guy next to us. The guy next to us wasn't too happy either. Every time my son caught another fish he became more and more pissed. And it wasn't luck either, my son was using a bullet with a teaser. He worked it like a pro. The other guy used a boat rod and just stood there.

When we got home my son told my wife how he outfished me. I was grinning from ear to ear.

Another memory was his first pool. I got to go around with him as they weighed the other fish against his. His look as he won each weigh-in was something to see.

Below is him piloting the Capt Doug on another trip.
His first pool.
Another pool
Seems like a lifetime ago.

20+ years ago, my eldest son, then about 8 or 10 and I were well off Cape Elizabeth (out of the sight of land) on a still, early fall afternoon on my Dyer 29, Quailoh. The sea was dead flat calm, not even a ripple until we came upon a quarter acre of disturbed water. Stopped the boat and drifted into this local frenzy of feeding bluefish and blue sharks. We sight fished for four hours until sunset, evening calling my wife on the old AM radio telephone to tell her not to worry.
Of course it was non stop fish, but there is nothing that enchants a preteen boy like catching a shark. I wasn't the amount of fish. or the size of the fish, but rather it was bing out in the middle of nowhere on a dead flat sea, alone together, surrounded by these endless fish, and the enthusiasm of a young boy watching and catching these sharks.
Now that I think about it, I do believe that we lost a rod over the side, but on that day, it did not matter.

late july 2003. eric is 12, not a huge fisherman, and im still learning the ropes. we had been fluking out at the ji bouy with his buddy and dad, put 4 or 5 keepers in the box on bucktails. got a bit snotty so lets go inside and belly. mid july, saturday afternoon, 85 degrees, im in 6 feet of water outside the channel in sea dog creek, can you say googan? capt lou, RAILED, drifts by slowly not 15 feet away as the clicker goes off. eric makes quick work of one very very stupid 30" bass and gets a huge standing ovation from the entire captain lou. so loud other boats start coming over, like whats going on here. kid was mortified, still is, if you care to remind him about it.

before the boat, town dock in bellmore behind what was then michaels restaraunt. audrey is about 5, maybe six. learned how to cast the spinner, bait the hook, play with the killies, and outfish all of us 5:1, in one afternoon. can barely get her on the boat now, let alone fishing.

i got a million of these, they are my best memories of fishing. great topic blaze.

for me

my little guy joseph caught numerous bass already, but the most memorable one was his first keeper livelined with bunker with gil on the aquaholic, watching him feel the pickup, give him time to run, and then set the hook made me a very proud father, thanks again gil.

When my son,now 14,was 5 and he caught his first keeper fluke and had his picture in the "fisherman",he's still totally into fishing and goes any chance he gets. When my nine year old daughter came out sharking with us this past season and it was like she's been doing it forever. She held out the whole day without a complaint and sat there grinding up peanut bunker to throw into the slick and thought it was fun.Now I need to get my 4 year old daughter out there for some of her firsts in the fishing world. But to tell you the truth any time my kids have a good day on the water is a memorable expirience for all of us.

Both my son and daughter enjoy fishing. My boy likes fishing off a boat but my daughter is game for any type of fishing. She tells all her friends that we are fishing "buds" and was up before I am if we are planning a trip. It's been a good way of keeping them close and out of trouble as they grew up. Early memories are of snapper fishing and catching bait. My daughters first stripe bass was a schoolie, but you would have thought she caught a new world's record.:) My son's first fish was a nice sized blue. He stuck his fingers inside of it's mouth before I could warn him not to. Bit two fingers right to the bone but to this day he shows off the scars with pride.:)

They are getting older now and as life takes them in other directions, (tears) it takes a bit of planning to get everyone together but when we are fishing as a family, life is good.

My son at 5 months holding wiggling spearing for the first time. Could not take his eyes off it, one of my favorite pictures. A few months later, his first word, FSH!

We took a set of black and white photos (pre-digital) at the lake in spring. My daughter was 3 1/2 and my son was 2. They dug worms in the yard and were waiting for me at the door to come home from work. My wife had everything ready. They could cast as far as I could and the looks on there faces in these photos as they waited for the bobber to sink was amazing. These pictures hang all over my house. They caught about 50 bluegills and 2 people asked them how to catch them like that.

My son laying on the kitchen floor in my waders as I walk in from working asking me "are you ready".

THE EEL STORY

The kids first surf bass.

Quint's first fluke caught on a squid lead he tied.

Quint's first bluefish/double fluke- We were in the yak fishing for fluke with spro's and teasers. While paddling to our spot a blitz errupts. He takes the spro off but forgets the teaser hook on the top eye. The spro gets smacked and the 5'ultra-lite sections off. He's crying/laughing as this blue is running out his 6lb test and the top half of his pole. Lost the 8# blue at the edge of the yak after 10 minutes battling it with the bottom half of the pole. We laughed the rest of the trip and his arms were sore. He follows it up by setting the hook on a fluke as the next blitz comes through. I'm waiting for the teaser or spro to get smacked by a blue and make him lose the fluke. I get smacked 4 times with the net in hand as the blues are all around us. Sure enough, he's got a double-fluke.

many more too

There 7 and 8, still love it.

When shaun was really small it was taking a leak outside. Then he started skipping rocks. Stacy liked casting a spinner farther then her dad. They never really got into salt water even though I tried - some things you just can't push or explain.
