I am thinking of docking the boat on the Long Island Sound this year. Manhasset bay or Hempstead harbor. What do you think of the water quality, is it cleaner than it used to be??? Will you eat the Fish that you catch there????

As much info as possible would help!

Hookem,

I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with the Western Long Island Sound waters. In fact, there is an incredible amount of fishes that migrates there and big ones to boot.

I've caught my share of large stripers in the early spring via plugs and chunks. I also caught plenty of chopper blues on poppers, there is also huge doormats to be had in the summer, an abundant of scups, hot tautog fishery, a short spurts of large weakfish and during the late season… You've got Bonito and Albies gorging themselves with spearing, sand and peanuts. The fall blackfish bite is also phenomenal and the last trophy sideliner migrates that path too.

What you should do? I strongly recommend that you visit my buddy's shop (R & G Bait and Tackle) and ask for Rich. He is probably the most knowledgeable, if not the best Western Long Island Sound sharpie there is!

Tell him I sent you there… and he'll take good care of you!

Hope this helps. :)

Abundance of bait

One thing Al forgot to mention is the abundance of bait that the Western Sound holds. Adult (spring through fall) and peanut bunker (late summer through fall) are usually around in large numbers. Some bait years are better than others.
