Ok flyfishers as well as others who may be curious about this highly specialized niche in the world of angling....we now have a great place to share ideas and information!
I'm hoping this forum proves to be a great place to come to with questions about gear and technique as well as a fun place to just shoot the breeze about our obsession.
So....tell us what flys you have been tying for the upcoming fall season?

Are you ready for those Albies that are starting to come in now?

Does the amount of bait in the water got you rubbing your hands together thinking of what lies just around the corner?

Bunker patterns

Yes Surfdevil......I think BIG Bunker patterns will be very useful this season!
I know that in my neck of the woods which is the North shore....Huntington area....Big Bunker are in solid for the first time in years.
As a matter of fact, due to their absence in recent years, i have none tied up....I'd better get busy.
i do have alot of peanut patterns tied up though, which I think will also be key.
I tie those Enrico Puglisi style and they look really great and fish well. Kudos to Enrico.
Hey....if anyone cares to post some pics of their favorite creations I'd love to see 'em.

EP flies

I've had the worst luck with those EP flies. They look great in the water and do catch fish but I was gettiing fouled (materials wrapped around the shank) every third or so cast. They worked on the schoolies in the spring but I gave all mine away and tried some new materials. For peanuts it's angel hair and yak hair, that's what these are. It's about that time...

Roger that JohnnyG

Nice flies.....

Yes I can see that happening....it has happened to me with other patterns I've tied using Polar Fibre.

With the Peanuts though I start at the bend of the hook and I stack clumps of EP fibre NOT Polar fibre as I work towards the front .Then I shape the fly with scizzors.

i find that the Ep material is not as limp as the polar fibre and tied this way it doesn't tangle.

I've also heard of fishermen actually carrying small combs in their packs to comb these flies out when they get matted......personally I think they're nuts.

that being said I have to admit that I just started using yak hair last seaso and I agree it is the stuff to use for wide profile flies.

Big Flys!!

Surfdevil......looks like you got all the bases covered for imitating larger bait.
ya know, one really great thing about our specialized sport is that it gives us that added pleasure of sitting at a vice and actually making these fishy looking flys.....it really helps with the cabin fever in winter.
Nice work Surfdevil!

Nice

Hey, its about time this got going. Nice job Noreast!!!!
I am new to salt flyfishing. I am addicted for life! I been at this for almost 2 months now and have really learned a lot from my mistakes.
Need a lot of fine tuning but I'll get there.

I also have issues with EP flies. The body gets wrapped around the hook shank. Maybe when my casting gets better I won't have this problem.

SurfDevil,
If you tied those flies yourself, you should start your own business. They really look great. I would be your first customer.
Want to start tying but need to find a good saltwater starter set-up

FYI, I Fish Staten Island and Breezy Point.

Breezy!

Hi SteveC

How has the flyfishing at "THE BEND" in Breezy been this season?
I miss that spot .....that is where I cut my teeth flyfishing and I have some very fond memories of the place.
To this day I have yet to top some of the nights I have experienced on "The Backside".
In the late spring , when the sandeels show, you gotta be thereon the backside well east of the bend though.........more like between the walk on and the lighthouse.
The flats there are a great place to have a real session with stripers.

SteveC..............check out some of the starter sets that LLBean, cabelas and Orvis offer.
You don't need to spend a lot of money to tie some good flys.....
and while some of the more expensive vises are real nice.....I'm still tying on a Griffiths trvel vice that cost me under $100 and came with all the basic tools.
Please keep us posted on the action at breezy:)

I have to agree with anthonyale, a expensive vise is not a must and will not make you tie better flies. If you enjoy the sport and will tie a lot I would recomend spending the money on a rotary vise.

I really don't beleive in kits, buy the vise and the tools you need. As far as materials buy them as you need them. Your material stock will build faster than you think. You will be able to tie any pattern in no time.

Just need to practice, I have only been tying for about a year and all the flies I posted I made myself.

Starter kits

Don't waste your money on a starter kit cause you'll end up with a pile of materials you'll never use. Instead figure out a few patterns that you want to tie and go from there. ie, clousers and deceivers...you'll need bucktail and hackle in a few colors each. Total cost around $20 with hooks and you'll have an arsenal to catch fish anywhere. It helps if you have friends that hunt deer!! Good luck

Great to see this section opened.
I was sold a Renzetti Traveler vise six years ago and love it to this day.

Anthonyale- There certainly are tremendous schools of bunker here in Huntington Bay. I've been watching them from our beach, but havn't seen them coraled up very much. Perhaps first light. Besides the very large bunker patterns seen on this sight, I occasionally hook up with choppers by working a large silver crease fly through the top of the commotion. Usually below is best but once in a while it works. They also work well along the banks of the harbor & lloyd imitating the snappers that are around.
