I have been casting myself into a coma over the last few weeks in search of Blues and stripers. From the south shore rising tide, predominantly cut three on Smith beach and the moriches inlet on the last hour of the flood.
For Blues I have been throwing metal lures dressed with a teaser up the line. Have also thrown chunks of bunker wieghted with about 4 ounce lead.
For bass i have been bouncing bucktails dressed with pork rind and have thrown fresh clam belly at the ocean.
Should I have relied on my angling spoils, I'd have died about a week ago!
It has struck me that with the baiting that I might be making a mistake attaching my weight to the line. While with the lure casting, could probably do with a bit more practise and continue to vary my retrieve speed.
Can any of you comment on the bait and weight particularly if you have any special tricks in this deprtment?

Fish-finder rig

If you're concerned that the weight of the lead may be deterring fish from picking up the bait, you may consider using a fish-finder rig. This type of set-up allows the weight to slide freely up and down the line, and purportedly allows a fish to take the bait without "feeling" the pull of the sinker.

Though this type of rig is quite common, I haven't personally found it to make a difference one way or another. Some folks out there may have had different experiences, though.
