I know early but I have a long weekend ahead of me.
Tonight ~ Pack up my other obsession?s gear and organize it for the twentieth or so time. If I remember I will pack some clothes.
Friday ~ Leave at about 3:00-4:00AM and head to the promised land. I should make it to the summer ?camp? house about 8:00AM the latest. Prime the well pump and check out the house for rodent infestation
. No one has been there this year yet so who knows what to expect.
I will then head about 15 miles south to Mecca. I will be in Cooperstown by about 10:00AM. I will bask in the glory that is baseball and make my regular rounds about town.
I have a couple of signings to attend in the afternoon and I will scope out the Induction site and the golf course and mark my spots in both places.
Friday evening I will meet up with some guys I know (but never actually met before) from another website in a local pup and talk shop and kick a few back. Maybe run into a ballplayer or two in the process.
After that I will head back to the house and really kick a few back and have a campfire by the lake as I do a lil? fishing.
Saturday morning ~ Bright and early hit the golf course in Cooperstown. I will secure my position and use my golf and baseball knowledge to persuade members of the Hall of Fame to autograph my items Piker style
. I know the golf course well (played it a bunch of times) and realized it is easier to get their attention chatting golf rather than baseball.
My newly learned cigar information assures me of a few autographs.
After the outing is over I will hit up Cooperstown for a couple of other signings, and just to soak it all in. Eventually I will head back to the house and repeat Friday night (beer, campfire, fishing, beer
)
Sunday ~ Back to the golf course real early and while try for some more autographs and chit chat with the Hall of Famers. Sunday only members play in the event and it moves quicker but I still do ok.
After the event at the golf course is over I will head over to the Clark Sports Center with my cooler and claim my previously marked spot. I will be there well before the 1:30 ceremony begins, but the whole ?thing? (pre-game if you will) is a blast to me.
I will watch the record number of returning members (54 will be there. Cal Ripken and Ernie Banks just today verified their attendance. Coincidence, I think not!
) of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum be introduced and then welcome in the newest enshrine into the Hall.
I will listen to Goose Gossage?s speech and I am sure I will enjoy every minute of it. After the festivities are over I will go back into Cooperstown and just putz around.
Late afternoon I will hit up a driving range and wack some golf balls as I sip a few brews. I love that range, real grass tee area and a spectacular view of a valley that you hit into. If conditions are right the deer make good greens.
Back to the house yet more campfire, beer, and fishing.
Monday ~ Back into Cooperstown and make my final rounds, if it is not too crowded I will go into the museum and see Goose Gossage?s plaque. I have yet to see Cal Ripken or Tony Gwynn?s as last year the place was nuts
. At the very least I will pick up my postcard plaques in the museum store and go across the street to the post office to get them postmarked.
I will kneel on the steps of the church of baseball, say my goodbyes and head home. I should make it home before evening rush hour.
Talking to baseball legends (and getting some autographs
), campfires, beer, golf, and of course fishing; life (for me) does not get much better than this.
Life is good
