Sunday................. I will take my pilgramage to Norwalk.
Last year as I was riding my scooter down East Ave I noticed an old man standing on the corner across the street form Norwalk Town Hall, holding a sign and a US Flag. His sign simply said "
Support Our Troops and Freedom Isn't Free. Obviously he was a vet.
At first I didn't pay much attention to him and I simply waved as I went by. But seeing the look on his face, the smile, the pride he had......well, it got the better of me. I don't know why, but I turned around and went back. I pulled my Harley up on the sidewalk next to him and got off to shake his hand and thank him for his service to our country.
I don't remember exactly how long I spent there with him, but it was quite some time, and we had a great talk. He had some really good.........and bad.........stories.
So, I asked him why he was standing here on the sidewalk today alone, when he could be across the street on the lawn of the Town Hall in a much better area.
He told me he was there to support our troops and show his dedication to the military and let people know that there must be sacrifices for freedom.
Then he told me something that was quite disturbing......he had asked for permission to use the corner of the Town Hall property but they told him no, he could not, and gave him some bull story about why.
So he set up across the street.
Then, the following weekend he saw
anti-war protesters show up, with HUGE banners and signs.........at least a dozen people .....set all the anti war crap on the FRONT LAWN OF THE TOWN HALL.
When he went to find out why they could be there, they simply told him, they have a right to protest his actions.
WTF........ that pissed me off, so........when ever I am in Norwalk and I see that veteran standing there, I go buy coffee and go stand beside him for a while.
I will proudly stand by any veteran and offer them support.........
this year, I have a brand new 3 x 5 flag just waiting to give to him when I see him.......I know he will be there standing up against the anti's...................
so will I.
