What are the conditions like at Gilgo/Sore Thumb these days?

The last two times I made it out there the amount of seaweed was unbelievable. It was practically unfishable ,though I did manage an 8lbs weakfish on one of those days.

My question is: is that the way it usually is this time of year? I've fished there many times in the spring and the fall and have never seen as much seaweed as I saw the last two times.

I'm thinking of heading out there this weekend but don't want to waste my time. It's a long drive from the city.

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks

The weed should be dyeing down now. I went out last Friday, and it was a lot better than it had been the week before. We are off the moon tides this week, and we haven't had an east wind in a while, both of which create extreamly high tides in the bay which dredge up all of the eel grass. I haven't been since last friday as I mentioned so I may be wrong.

Weeds & Deeds

AtomAnt. I know your coming a long way, but if your coming out for the day and you hit weeds...Go East to the the RM bridge and try Democrat Point. Just go West after you go over the bridge and as the road U-turns (about 1/2 mile) you will see the 4x4 access point. There is no guaruntee that there will be no weeds there but it may be worth your while. Based on the reports about RM the last few weeks it does not seem like RM has had much of a weed problem and some pretty big Bass have been coming off the beach. The ride from Gilgo to the RM bridge is about 5-7 miles.

I was at RM5 Monday AM and it was practically weedless. But I went back this AM and it was a lot weedier. Not as bad as on the bay side but still not clean.

I've had trouble with weeds on the inlet side all summer long usually. :(

Thanks again guys. I've fished Demo a few times, but aren't there restrictions on Demo (i.e. no access between 7:00 am and 5:00 PM) this time of year? Anyway, I'll give it a shot this Saturday just before dawn.

And for the record, I actually drive all the way from Montclair, NJ Jersey (about 8 miles west of Giants stadium and about 60 miles from Sore Thumb). I was a little embarrassed to admit that last time. But that should tell you Long Island guys how great you have it. The Jersey shore can't compete with LI beaches. 4WD Access in NJ is very restricitve and expensive. The only year round access is at Island Beach State Park ($125 for the year) and that's actually further from my house than Gilgo or Demo.

Some day, I'll convince my wife to move back across the Hudson and hopefully out to the Island. Until then, I'll just have to sit in traffic and dream. **** this this sport is obsessive!
