I caught my first weakfish the other day (20") by the Point lookout jetty. I think I just got lucky because I was using a terminator rig with spearing and was trying for fluke. I would like to know where I should go to try and catch more. Also what bait to use and do I fish the on the bottom? I usually fish by the Wantagh and Meadowbrook bridges. Thanks in advance.

If you look back in the posted reports do an advanced search into June, I think posts by Rubber Hooks. He fished the wantagh bridges see what he said.

I usually use sandworms for weaks. They are real timid and dont like boat traffic, So early am or late night seem to be better, also have had luck at last of high to first of out going. Less movement the better.

Weaks are my specialty

Jig, jig, jig! At the begining of the season (spring) many artificials work. My favorite is a white worm on a lead head. I have been recently getting them on a 007 diamond jig tipped with sand worms. Just tie the line directly to the lure...not much terminal tackle. As prblmssvld has said boat traffic is the enemy. They tend to be active in between 5AM (dawn) till about 8:30-9AM. Fishing for weaks now can be slow...they are generally a spring fishery. But when you come into them the action will be fast and ending just as quick. In the state channel recently I had some nice weaks to 25", lots of run offs. One particular day I brought up a 20" rebaited the hook quickly and got a second the exact same size before the rig made it to bottom. Then it was over. Patience is the key with this fish just as it is with bass. My largest this season went just over 8lbs. Live snappers work well also. You may want to use either a 3-way or F/F rig for these. Some people cast and retrieve but I don't...it never worked for me!

good luck!

weakfish

Thanks for the input everyone. I did review some older posts on weakfish which were very good; however I didn't see anyone mention if I should anchor or drift them. Any thoughts on the best way to fish?

I caught my first weakie a couple of weeks ago (no pun intended) 18"s, 2 lbs. off a captree boat with a soft plastic worm lure, lost a HUGE weakie after it went under the boat (saw it when it was right at the surface then the line broke).

Drift worms on the bottom or cast jigs while you drift. Either method will produce weakies. Often, you will find weakfish lurking below schools of feeding bluefish. Get your jig below the blues - right to the bottom - and begin your retrieve. Soft plastics, bucktails and 007's will all catch sea trout.

Good luck -

weaks

I always try to jig weaks under a school
of blues but once I had a real big one and ended up with only half.watched helplesly as the blues ate my weakfish.
After taking some measurements we estimated that fish to be 13 to 14 lbs.
Bummer huh!!

007's are a size of a diamond jig. Go to your local shop and inspect the diamonds on the sides of them will be #'s. I prefer drifting for my weaks and I bounce whatever I am using quickly. Be prepared weaks usually strike as the jig is returning to the bottom. If you have any slack in the line you may miss a strike...they are quick.
