Way Way Back

This past season,we employed a bird w/ rigged jet head way back in our spread (+250-300 ft) out of the shotgun position. It seemed that trip after trip, we managed to get knockdowns by keeping a rigged bait in that position. Anyone else try this in their spread?

Mahi,
this season on a trip to the H.A Buoy and Virginia wreck I had quite a few multiple hook ups with dolphin and bluefin with that set up,birds and purple/black jet heads. They were fished off the outriggers not down the center.

question,
what is the distance between the bird and the jethead lure? Is it the fartherest back in the spread? do you run one off of each outrigger?
The bird jet-head worked well for us as well, had it in the center about 250 ft. out. Most knockdowns came on that set-up.
Tricube,
my leaders are about 6' long on all my lures,I just snap it behind the birds. If it workks good that day,I set up about 4 rods like that. They don't have to be on riggers to work.

We ran a mixed bag in our spread last year, but always ran the bird/jet head down the center. It was the most consistent element in our offering. We did, however, mix up the color combinations as weather conditions changed-which probably accounted for part of our success.
The WWB first heard about it in Hatteras. Have has success with it when nothing else worked. Bird with green machine. Put it back shot gun. You know it's far enough when you can't see it any more. Probably do not need the bird but I want the rig to float if we hook up on a short line. Can't do it in a crowd or near the fliers.

BIRDS and JETS

Hi:
Leader length makes a difference to my rigs. I keep mulitple length leaders on board(I know, it's pain in the AXX) but it helps me catch more fish.
Some days an 8 foot leader works better(calm seas here) . When the seas pick up I make sure that the leader IS LONG ENOUGH to keep the Jet in the middle of the following wave. Before you set it out look at it close in where you can see how the rig works.
On some days, I've used leader lengths as long as 12 feet in length. Problem with this is that you have to hand line the leader to get at the fish.
OH,well.
If you fish these rigs closer, please make sure that the following lure(Jets, etc) stays in the MIDDLE OF the FOLLOWING WAKE WAVE. I've even put out 3 ounce Japanese feathers with good success behind the birds.
Let me know is these tips work for you.

way way back definitely works. i have used it many times with great sucess. the only limitation on how far back ill go is the number of other boats in the area.
Thanks for the tips...while on this topic, I just bought a spreader bar -**** they're expensive. Is it OK to put out just one bar (on the rigger) and then troll plugs/feathers/clones on the flat lines, deep line and the other rigger? Or is it better to troll multiple spreader bars...
bars

GOOD QUESTION.

I tried just one bar. I cought some fish.
I went and used two bars. I did better.
I went and put out chains with the bars and did much better.
Offshore, the more....the better.
Inshore, one bar will suffice if you put it offcenter and surround it by single lures.
That's just my opinion. Any other
opinions?

I wont put a bar on the OR too much tension , pops the clips and I dont really wont to tighten the clips too much . In your post you said 1 bar in the OR, try to get 2, off the transom. Stalker has a decent small squid bar or a TT bar I think sells for under $70.
