I had a long chat with Rob from VS about a month ago, and he did confirm that they are looking to reorg as a tackle manufacurer only. They actually want to expand their product line to include conventional reels, and offshore reels as well. As far as their service is concerned, it IS NOT $50 per year for warrenty service, only the cost of shipping via UPS. They have to charge for non warrenty repairs as do all manufacturers of fishing gear, or any thing else for that matter. Companies cannot stay in business if they do repairs for free. They reason they ask to have their reels returned annually, is so that they can replace any seals that are worn. I believe that their reels are worth the money, as long as you make sure to send them back for warrenty maintenance every year. I also heard a rumor that they may authorize some tackle shops for repairs in the future

They changed their policy recently. It used to be that you only had to pay for shipping. Now they make you pay $36.95 a year. Not as good as it used to be, but still not bad.
I belive they have only done this recently, when I spoke with them in August, they didn't make you pay. Here is the URL with the information on the program http://www.vanstaal.com/news/maintenance.html

First off, Basshole, why do you have to be such an ass. If I am missinformed so be it, but you don't have to be such a jerk. I did'nt send my VS's back last year, but I did the year before, and all I had to pay was shipping and handling. And, in fairness to Van Staal, I did have a problem with my VS150 this year, and because I missed shipping it back last year I had to pay for the repair, however, they informed me that if I started sending the reel back again regularly, they would put me back on warrenty so I would'nt have to pay for repairs again.
Why don't you go catch some fish, maybe you'll become a nicer guy.

That's ok, my best friend is the same way.The more he catches the less sleep he gets and the more cranky he gets.
Now, why don't you go and get a couple of eels and break their backs!!!!!:)
