What are the weights on the most commonly used lubricant for ball bearings and gears in our fishing reels? I am experimenting on 10W40 synthetic for ball bearings right now. I would like to clean and lube all my fishing reels when I have the spare time.

I would go to your nearest tackle shop and buy a grease made for fishing reels. All the major reel mfgs have there own brand. Why guess when they have done the work for you. Your reels will work alot better.

Do not use conventional motor oil! Motor oils contain detergents designed to remove or etch away carbon buildup. You probably heard the term "drive your engine clean" Over a period of time these detergents will dissolve plastic, rubber and even certain metal parts. If you want to go cheap buy a big bottle of 3 in 1 or turbine shaft oil. You can find a non detergent motor oil at farm supply places like Tractor Supply, etc.

you can use Viper lube brand grease made by locktite(most autoparts stores and freeport marine)Superlube is also good. For max freespool the lubes for inline skate bearings are some of the fastest. However it ; like any oil in a bearing as opposed to grease needs more frequent reapplication.Hot sauce is also great oil for reels. Boca bearing also offers a reel specific oil on there website.
