Hi all,

Recently I have received 3 emails that I want to pass on.

1. Heading was Cell Spacing, downloaded it, because I knew the name I opened it. Could not get it to print out properly. Eventually deleted it.

2. On Sat rcvd email heading of Meeting Schedule. Dowload it and virus scanned it b4 opening. It contained the KLEZ virue. Spoke to sender and he did not send me a msg.

3. This AM rcvd email asking if I sent him a msg about cell spacing. I said I have not sent you any msg's.

Over the weekend, I ran the anti virus program many times. I think, hope, I am clean. Be careful.

Hi Capt Niel,

I was infected by that klez virus last spring. It seems to be very prevalent in the fishing community, because I am still getting banged by it 1-3 times a day, from names that I am familar with from this and other sites. It has lots of different subjects, "meeting schedule", "Test", "a new game", "Hi" and other garbage. When I had it, it sent out emails to everyone in my address book, and said they were coming from anyone in my address book, inbox and even trash, so you will never figure out who it actually came from. Just keep the virus software up, and don't open anything you don't know what it is about, even if it is coming from someone you recognize.

Capt Neilf,
Good point. As we all send and receive e-mails from people we may not personally know, we should keep our antivirus software up to date. I use Norton AV, with live-update. But sometimes live update is a week or more behind the latest update. So I go directly to symantec (www.symantec.com), download the new definitions and update NAV manually. Keeps me protected. Make sure you have it on for e-mail scanning and perform a system scan every week or two.
The Klez virus and others are still running around the Internet, so you may see them again. And if you do open an e-mail that doesn't look right, don't click on any attachments.
Let's worry about where to get the fish and not viruses.
Capt Tom

Ps for those of you running a PC with no anti-virus software of any kind, you are asking for trouble. You probably spend more in bait for one fishing trip than it would cost for Norton AV or one of the other products.

Easy Way

Do not use MS Outlook Ex. as your pr e-mail PGM.

Use Norton antyvirus

Or

Trend OfficeScan Client (I like this one)

it is performing manual virus scans, real-time virus scans !!!! , scheduled virus scans, configuring options and displaying virus information, detects virus action and removes viruses from infected files, monitors the host
computer's I/O processes, and alerts the main program when a virus is
detected.

Or Use Yahoo e-mail server :)

It's very easy to fake an email from someone by putting their name and/or email address in the FROM or REPLY-TO fields. That doesn't necessarily mean it really came from them!

The only way to be certain it came from the person it says it's from is to examine the email header lines and most people filter those out (nor would they know how to read them anyway).

As for viruses, my NAV blocks at least 6-8 infected spam attachments each day. :(

virus software is not the end all

virus software is good but wont fully protect your computer from virus

you see any snot nosed college brat can rename virus files or come up with new virus and your norton or mcafree will not stop these as it does not reconginse the file names as actual virus

i am internet active, have never had any antivirus software and have never had any problem with my computer gettijng infected

use common sense, dont open any attachemnts....for the computer newbies this means never click on any clickable part of any email, even if it is from someone you know(worms)

antivirus software is marketed to us useing fear as a selling point, some peeps get scared and fork over 50 bucks for norton or mcafree,

i just know what i am doing and dont fall for the marketing scare tactics and have never had any problem

remember. dont click on any clickable part of any emails even from your own
mom and you be safe. this is fact

So...

So how do you know what your mom is sending you? McAfee cleaned the Klez 4 or 5 times this year for me. Don't open email that looks suspicious or is from an unknown source. Attached files from known friends can be scanned.

Quick comment,
You can get a virus from going to a web site or clicking on a url, picture, attachment or anything like that. I have been on sites that when I click on a banner to another site, the av software catches a virus.
Why play with fire?

Here's a new angle from the makers of computer viruses: The hoax virus. There are a few of them going around the internet. A friend sends you a message that "you may have the abc virus - search your drive for abc.exe."

You do a search & sure enough it comes up. So you delete it & guess what? That wasn't a virus - it is one of your file sys config files & you just deleted it. NOW you're screwed.

These geniuses just love to waste peoples time.

Viruses

In NAV you have the option for real time protection Use this all the time and make sure your virus definitons are up to date . Do a weekly scan of your hard drive. Most emails have attachments that if clicked will execute the virus. There are some trojan horse viruses that will stay on your hard drive and execute at certin times. Like I saw in this post the renaming system file virus is also one to watch for. I also have seen some viruses that actually use anti viruses to crash your PC so It's a nasty place the computer world just watch and back up your important data is all you could do to stop it for now?
