I went to Modells in East Meadwow,NY today to buy some baseballs and a few things for the team I couch.
When I returned home I looked closer at the receit and found the normal sales tax of 8.625% for a total of $3.45.
and below it another tax at 4.625% for a total of $1.85

I called the store and the manager tells me its " a village tax"
HUH?
A village tax? Since when and what the **** is a village tax?

He tells me its always been that way in East Meadow.

"Really? Then why didn't the Home Depot right next door charge me this village tax when I was there yesterday"

Anyone know anything about this? I've never heard nor seen this before ...

East Meadow IS NOT A VILLAGE!!!! It is a hamlet. Manager is an idiot who has no idea what he is talking about. I've lived in East Meadow for 20-something years and have never heard of that. I just pulled out a receipt from Modells from January of 2007. The only tax it says on mine is the 8.625% one. Hold your pants.....cause now I just pulled another receipt. It's from WalMart in East Meadow from 6/07. And get this....
TAX 1 - 8.625%
TAX 2 - 4.625%

Weird. Never noticed that before. I hope someone can find out what the **** that it is exactly for.

Normal sales tax in Ny state is 8.625% except on apparel (clothing) under $100.00 The tax on that is 4.625%

So if you baught a t-shirt or a sweatshirt or something that they classify as "apparel" valued under $100 there should be a seperate tax line for that item(s) at the lower rate of 4.625%

It is not a "Village Tax" but a "Sales Tax"

Hey Joe, we had the same issue with internet sales for a recent site...Different items shiped in NY...regular stuff would have the 8.625% and apparel would have the lower rate. It was a pain in the but to program.

It's just one big shell game Don. Since no one is cutting expenses, if they give you a sales tax break on clothing they just have to collect the tax revenue somewhere else. Just like the STAR program rebates, everyone is paying it back somewhere else.

Keeps a lot of people employed figuring it all out though.

Hmmmm...looks like it is a seperate clothing tax at 4.625%.
Stopped home for a quick lunch and am looking at the replies here & my Modells rct...

2 dozen baseballs : $39.99 taxed at 8.625% = $ 3.45
1 pair Nike cleats: $39.99 taxed at 4.625% = $ 1.85

I never new clothing was taxed at a lesser % ( I'm not much for clothes shopping !)

Let me go check a recent clothing purchase from Sears.

OK...here is a reciet for 5 pair of work jeans bought at Sears in Hicksville on 3-22-2008
Total before tax: $88.95
Sales tax : $4.11
Total : $93.06
Thats a sales tax at 4.625%

I'll be a son of a gun!
Ya learn something new everyday!

I don't think that in NY any government below the county level has the power to impose a sales tax.

Cities in Westchester collect sales tax, needs state approval though.

H'mm, waht cities? I knew there was a Westchester sales tax, but didn't realize there were municipal sales taxes on top of that.

And it's still lower than 8.625%. I know about this because we were just awarded a 0.25% increase by Albany, which is going to add another $5 million in revenues. So that link needs to be updated.
