I have an 8' shakespear vhf antenna model # don't remember,anyway the antenna is starting to show signs of age and I'm looking to replace it and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations?

Just switched from a Shakespear over to a Digital. A much better antena. Compare the two side by side, weight, materials and you will understand why.

Keep in mind it's not the outside fiberglass that makes the antenna work it's the internal wire. You probably already know this though. A nice shiny new antenna is always nice.

Get the digital like the other post say. The difference is that the inside of the antenna is copper all the way up compared to coax with a little piece of copper sticking out to the top. They will have them at the boat shows and that will probably be your best deal.

There is nothing wrong internally, but the polyurethane coating has warn off and the fiberglass looks like it needs a haircut.

Does anyone know if I can coat it, and if so what should I use?

If you are not having any problems other than the way the ant. looks, I would do a "VERY" fine light sanding, and coat it with rod varnish.
