Which one???

Revisiting an old topic, but never really discussed in detail. I am interested in getting a food vac sealer and I am wondering which models would be recommended. I am after the models and the pros/cons of the different units... I am also open to any negatives from any past experiences you may have had that would help me avoid the same pitfalls.

Thanks in advance. Mark

I have the FoodSaver model # V2840. Had it for nearly a year.
It's the one that folds up for storage taking up less counter space when not used.
It is much stronger than the one I had 6 years ago. That one lasted 4 years. I hope this one will last a little longer. Looks like it will.
I highly recomend it.

I just went by thier site www.foodsaver.com and they have some nice new models that work in the up right position. Looks nice...gives me foodsaver envy. :)

The one I have is around $130 from Amazon.com, delivered.

Also, remember, they make thier money on the bags. :(

550 vac

i have the food saver 550 vac had it for 5 yrs,use it a lot i pack 3-6 deer a year plus fish and bulk meats.it still going strong when it dies i'm going for one of the new ones that hold the bag, seal without vacuming, biult in cutter.the cons of mine is making[first seal] the bags if its not rolled up tight it takes a long time, the bags are a lot of money so cutting them to the rigth size.definetly worth the money.

Vacum Sealers

Does anyone know if the Tilla foodsavers are good? I saw them on sale in Kohl's a week or two ago, I was thinking about getting one, but wanted to see first if people have had good or bad experiences with them.

I have the Foodsaver v2840 as well. it works great and very convenient to use. I think I payed like $180. the most important thing to keep in mind is not to buy the really cheap ones. the units that are like $40 are fan driven vacuums instead of piston driven vacuums. you don't want a fan driven sealer. No power.

Very good. They work best if you freeze the small fish on a cookie tray first, so they don't stick together and then vaccum seal them while they are frozen.

The decision is in...

We read all the discussions and bought the new upright 3840 model with the fancy moisture detectors and bells and whistles... and a load of accessories, including 10 rolls, that the wife wanted... then used the 15% off purchase code for the whole thing and got free shipping as well... spent $220 total. Not too bad!

as for freezing first, why???

i bag in ziplock sandwich bags first( guestimate a trip supply)

then vacuum...stores great

So they don't stick together when you go to use them. Also, freezing without pressure will help keep the bellies intact, so they don't "blow out" when you defrost them.
