I have heard that silver bullets can be effective for fluke, but have never tried them myself. Can anyone share knowledge of the technique for using them, and what are good locations to use them? Thanks.

Sak, I have had success with bullets in the Sound, Block Island and Raritan Bay, so I would imagine that they work in most places. Typically I tie them on with a LARGE dropper loop about 12-14" above. On the loop I attach a white, green or pink teaser and I usually replace the hook on the bullet with a quality teaser. Put a large strip of squid, fluke belly, sea robin, etc. on the bullet and tip the teaser with a spearing or sand eel. Drop it down and start bouncing it on the bottom. That's basically it, although you'll have to adjust the sizes depending on the current, depth, etc. There are many variations of the bullet and they all seem to work pretty well. I've seen many different ways of rigging the bullet, but that's the simplest and it works just fine.

Gamakatsu - Thanks for the reply. This seems to be pretty much the same methodology, technique, baiting, etc. I use when I bucktail. Is there any reason to pick up and use some silver bullets as opposed to bucktails?

It's just another version of a lure to have. They are cheap and the one day that that is all the fish seem to want you will be kicking yourself for not having them. I like them because they sink faster than a bucktail and are easier to use in deep water.

You can also try using them instead of a sinker when you use a bait hook for fluke.

And the best reason of all........... It is fun to have as many lures as possible.

I rig em up using a 3way swivel. One end goes to your main line ;)
One goes to the silver bullet/musket ball/klune mine. I use a section of stiff mono leader(20 or 30lbtest) about 6-8". One the third eye I tie up a plain hook on 20-30 lb fluro about 28 to 36"(depends on drift/current/location).

I usually put a nice long strip of fluke belly or squid on the SB and sometimes a jumbo spearing.
On the plain hook I'll put a small piece of squid/belly with a spearing/killie or I just place two spearig on it. Bait up, drop down, bounce, bounce, bounce, set hook, reel up, measure, deposit in correct receptacle(bay or bucket), repeat.

try the hook direct tothe ball

i have been fishng the bullets with the hooks and teaser right to the ball with a swivel. Have had better luck and hook ups compared to the leader way as the other guys described. in the bay that is. In the ocean I would go with the leader way myself good luck

crazy eyes

I always use silver bullets for fluke (usually in the 3 or 4 ounce sizes) with a teaser and i do pretty good with them. Try the "crazy eyes"... they are silver bullets with eyes on both sides of the silver ball. They are supposed to be better because fluke tend to attack when they make eye contact with prey (so i've heard). I've been using the past couple of times and have done well.
