Has anyone tried an umbrella rig set up with tuna lures (i.e. feathers, clones etc.) for any offshore species? I have umbrella rigs and don't want to spring for spreader bars for the few times BFT come in close enough for me to fish for them if I don't have to. I realize some lures may be too heavy for umbrella rig arms to support.

Hipshot,
they do sell a rig that looks like an umbrella but it has chains of artificial ballhoos on them, they use it as a teaser. It is wieghted and swims below the surface.A regular umbrella might not work, the speed of 7-8 knots might make it rise to the surface and tumble.Spreader bars should really be fished off of outriggers.

Why don't you just purchase the bar or offshore dredge unrigged? They're fairly inexpensive, and you can rig them anyway you please. I agree, a standard umbrella probably won't withstand being pulled with weighted artificials at BFT trolling speeds.

Thanks for the imput Pauly and Mahi Mahi. I have no riggers so I Guess I'll have to stick with daisy chains. Or maybe I'll just try the unmrella rig with just skirts (unweighted) and hooks. If it doesn't work I haven't lost anything.
