Hi Capt Neil:
I have a blank that has two very equally pronounced spines. A Stress test under a 5 and 10 pound load reveals they are identical. Where should I place the spine and which spine should I use? Should I place the side that has the thicker wall(at the butt) on top? Should I turn it 90 degrees and build it on the side? Is this a desirable characteristic for a blank to have or is this a manufacturing flaw? The blank will be spiral wrapped. Please help. Thanks.

Hi,

If the spines are 180* apart you have a perfect rod. It will cast or fight fish equally well. This condition is what blank builders wish they could produce all the time.

If the are 90* or so apart, one spine should be a little more pronounced.

Are you using a spine finder that has ball bearings?
