Lets what we come up with here. Have any of you guys had any inshore tuna action last year or in recent years. At areas such as NA, HA, linda, within 30 miles or so. Used to be small bluefins in these areas. Are they still there? Anyone been trying. I gave it a few trys this year ended up with some bontias and a few mahia to 15lbs, but never fished when the water got good do to the nasty weather since the last week of aug. I heard one guy from the babylon tuna club had 4 yellow fins at the NA. I thought to myself ok he had 4 bluefins, but when he was there the water was really really good, clearest i had seen inshore all year and it was at its warmest point so i guess it could have been yellows the guy caught after all i have seen soo many different things on the water nothing suprises me anymore. Anyway lets get some feed back on inshore tunas because this can be a great time when the fish are around and the smaller boats can also join in on this action.

angrymahia, I only nailed 1 Bluefin last year, right around Rock Pile 1 in the middle of June. I was heading out sharking and saw fish pushing water so I trolled a couple poles. Small fish, weighted in at 36.4 lbs. That was it for me and Bluefin. There were a lot of nice fish right off the beach in late November - early December out of Jones Inlet, but the weather did not cooperate for me to go and try for them. Had a lot of Skippy's, Green Bonita, False Albacore, & Mahi Mahi throughout the summer.

The year before last, meaning summer 2001', I found Bluefin at Cholera on August 10. The water was beautiful, nice deep Blue color, clean. They were there about a week, then disappeared. Nothing big, but there were plenty of 20lb-30lb fish. Not many people knew about it, I think I found them, and only told a few members in my club. It was a lot of fun catching them on nice sunny days in August so close to home.

I have not seen any Yellowfin inshore in quite some time, but I'm sure there are some around, just not in the same numbers like they were years ago.

Slim Pickens Last Year

Mahia,
Referring back to makomat's Post. His info was very accurate. Mat along with over 200 other local fisherman is a member of a L.I. Club. I collect all of the weight slips for the year each year. Last year Mat's Bluefin was the only weight slip I received for a Tuna, not counting Canyon caught fish! Unbelievable.

Hey there guys,

I went blue fishing on a party boat out of sheapshed bay brooklyn out to the mudhole for the choppers and all night nobody was catching anything except me and my brother. We were killing the blue fish 30 between us. My firend wasn't catching anything either. So he went to the front of thw boat and then it happened!! WHAAMMMMMM A yellow fin tuna took his butter fish and went south and he fought it for like 20 minutes and pulled a nice 30 lbs yellow fin. 10 minutes later, another guy hooked up on a BULL DOO DOO. We were using un cut bait while the rest of the boat was using cut bait.
I always bring a flat of bait even though they have bait aboard..
My friend who landed that tuna used a super light outfit.
Penn 209 with a light-medium rod with 50 lb mono.

Can't wait to gt back out there guys!!

Every Year @ CHOLERA!

Hey MakoMatt.

I too do well with bluefin at Cholera in early August. In fact, a few years ago, I "found" them first. I told my buddy about it and he publically ridiculed me on channel 68.

The very next day, we went out and targetted them with bigger stuff. GUESS WHAT? Biggest fish ~ 88 pounds. Unbelievable. For the next 2 weeks, all the "offshore" boats were trolling GOLDS at the Cholera. It was funny watching the faces on all those helpless "bluefishing" boats that didn't know what was going on!

Not only that, we had a nice mix of MAHI ~ up to 25 pounds in the mix. My only complaint ~ The fishing was from sun-up to 7.30 ~ THATS ALL!

But hey ~ 8.4 nautical miles for BLUEFIN & MAHI ~ what could be better!

Makoman,
its not every year that this happens, but I was also in on that action you mentioned but only managed some smaller fish. You need the warm, blue, clear patch of water to spin off and come in close. That year we had them actually two miles north of cholera,6.2 miles from the inlet to just south of cholera.
Last year you really couldn't find that type water inside of the canyon.I usually pick a fish or two in the area of the HA to the Virginia. I've had some nice multiple hook ups there with both bluefin and mahi's.

I think it was about 4 summers ago my friend went all the way to Tom's canyon only to come back with a few tiny yellowfins. When he got back to the dock a guy fishing around Cholera had a few 45-55 lb. yellowfins. Yes, I said yellowfins at Cholera. I would make fun of him but a week or two earlier we were on our way to the offshore grounds when in the same vicinity birds were diving and bait was spraying. Looking back at the beaches in the distance I said that they were probably bluefish and that it was "too close to shore to be tuna". I have even heard of wahoo at Cholera; which is hard for me to believe but it's possible with the super hot summers the past few years.

More often than not, I have them there. They seem to make their appearance at the Cholera at some point during August. We had great water their this year too ~ while we were fluking, clear & blue. We saw mahi & makos while drifting too.

In years past, they have taken up residence. This year was sporatic. A few fish, but nothing like a few years ago.

Actually, now that I think about it, we fished just past Cholera in August ~ with the 16-20 squid draggers in the area. They were 15 miles off. Gorgeous water ~ tons of life.

Tuna

Late June last season we had a run of BFT Rat's to 200#'s at the 25-30 fathom
curve off the backside of the Vineyard..

Boated 50 Rat's in two day's (upto 175#)

Incredible action for a week or so.. :)
those fished moved north around the Cape and returned in Sspt/Oct.. The weather sucked both month's and never did get back out... But the Hydro and Atlantis canyons to the lanes had a hot bite up until the weather went to pot :(

Alway's this year...?
