Hi,
You should not have to spend a $1000.
Recently there were off shore rods listed in the for sale forum on
this site.
I take it you are looking for a 50# stand up rig. If not let us know.
Will you be fishing on a party boat or a private boat? If you know people who fish off shore ask their opinion regarding what they think is best and why.
If money was a concern I would get the best reel I could and a lesser quality rod. If money was not a concern I would get the very best reel and a custom made rod using the very best components.
Now for reality!
If you shop carefully you can find a Penn rod and a Penn Senator reel between $350 and $400. Maybe less.
I would go with a Seeker Stand Up rod. They are well made as factory rods go.
A custom will cost between $400 and $750 depending upon the builder.
Many of the better reels go around $500.
You will find all types of combinations being used.
Check the off shore forum for more info.
