Was looking at a Penn Senator 9.0 60 to 80 pound test rod - matched to a Penn 9.0 Senator.

wader, is this a new or used outfit? Reason I ask, if it is new, in the price range of the Senator Rods, I think a better "off the shelf" choice would be from Bass Pro Shops, Offshore Angler, Ocean Master Series Rods. I would have to see the rod, but it sounds like the reel is a bit much for that rod. The 6/0 - 9/0 Senator Reels are great reels, and would venture to say that the Senator series have probably accounted for more large fish over the years, including I.G.F.A. World Records, then any other reel on the market.

Wader,
I'd go with a 5 & 1/2 or 6ft tuna stick with all roller guides. I've been using these rods for years without any problems and they hae caught come really big fish. Mine have 80Ws spooled with 100 pound test.

Matt - yes rod & reel are new. Penn is recommending the 9.0 Senator reel for this rod.
Sports Authority - rod $87 reel $149

Mike - has roller guides & runs 5 to 6 feet

I've seen 2 different rods with similar pound test ratings from Penn. One is the one decribed above with slick butt so you can place in a holder & use for trolling.
The other is a shorter rod - mostly butt, no slick butt (probably more of a stand up rod) - but the actual pole portion of the rod is very short & seems substantially "whipier" (is that a word?) then the larger 6 footer. Doesn't seem like it would hold up as well against a decent size fish.

Anyone have any experience with this type of rod? Would be using 3 maybe four times a year off of a freind's boat for tuna & shark. With the occasional trip to Venezuela for bill fish.

Hey Bennie - any thoughts?

wader, for the reel, without sending you to Australia, try Shark River Mail Order, Shark River, N.J., www.srmo.com Penn Senator, 115L - 9/0 $124.99 plus shipping, still less then Sports Authority, you can order it without getting up from your chair, and have it delivered to your door. They also have rods as well, check the prices.

I think overall, for that price range, you are getting a nice package, both rod and reel.

Tight lines,

Matt - thanks for the input - I'll take a look at that site.

By the way - how was your cruise with the potential MRs. MakoMatt?

Wader,
The shorter, "whippier" rod sounds more like a stand up rod. Compare it to a tuna stick, which is a great stand up rod. Don't let the "whippiness" fool you, I've beaten 700 pound marlin on my 6 foot tuna sticks. Thing doubled right over and I thought that it was going to break any second, but it held in there and is still fishing.

Matt - great news on the casino winnings. Now you don't have to hide or explain any of the fishing purchases. "Hey - I bought it with my casino winnings - it was free stuff."
Now - as long as she doesn't know how much you won - you can probably stretch out this explaination for quite awhile.

She doesn't know how much the winnongs where - does she?

Who am I kidding - she's female. They intuitively know/smell money.

Hi all,

When selecting a stand up tuna rod considers these;
How tall you are determines how long the rod should be.
The shorter the rod the shorter the stroke and the more hurt you put on a fish. Too long a rod and you put a lot of stress on your lower back.

Many of my customers prefer the Seeker composite over the Calstar or Lamiglas blanks bcause the tip flexes more and they like that, more fun.
