Tuna Reels

There is a big difference in price with the Penn KG's and the Tiagra. Like they say in the Olympics.....GO FOR THE GOLD! The gold reels look good and have alot of good features. They are more beefy when it comes to tuna chunking. The KG's may be lite when the big boys are around. The Penn V-70 is a great reel, we landed a 600lb + Blue Marlin last season with no problem. The fish was tagged and released after a 1 hour battle.

Several of the guys I fish with have the
50tld 2speed it's less expensive than the Tiagra's and it's lighter in weight.
It does'nt hold as much line,but if your
talking about the 50W TLD LRS it has the
same size drags as the Tiagra.

What are you going to clamp the reel onto ?

You mentioned spanning the 10KG which sets up as a 20# reel, to the 50W Long Range which sets up as an 80# reel.

You won't want to use the same rod for these setups. Then again are you referring to trolling, chunking, jigging ?

private or party boat?

if you're fishing from a private boat, i'd go with the much lighter tiagra 30WLRS. 28# drag and use 500 yards of powerpro as backing with a 50 yard topshot of 80# mono. if you use a premium spectra like jerry brown line one in 80# (it's as thin as 50# powerpro) you can increase your mono topshot length. only reel mod i would make to the 30wlrs is the reelcolors handle; big hypalon handle with much better leverage than stock.

if you're fishing from a party boat, get a tld50wlrs. it's light, strong and has the capacity for 440 yards of 80# mono; no mods necessary.

the 30wlrs is much lighter than the 50wlrs (51 oz. vs. 82 oz.). the difference holding your outfit at the rail is significant. when the fight is on, the 30wlrs is a narrower reel, less wobble when you crank.

you are giving up some capacity and some drag (28# vs. 34#) but with spectra, it's not much difference and do you think that you'll be fishing over 28# drag at strike?

Hey,

I had the same problem two months ago..But I ended up getting a Penn 70VS..The reel is unbelievable. It can take out anything!!! The TLD's are nice reels, but if you ever decide to go for giant tuna or marlin, it may not do..But with the 70VS you can be very confident that it will handle pretty much anything.

Tuna reel

If your willing to try something different;I can help you.send me a private message.Also if you buy the Penn 50 I can blue print it if your interested.Also remember a Penn 50 with Cal's 2-speed conversion has much better gears than the stock Penn.If you find a deal on a single speed 50 it might be worth sendind it to Cal rather than Pay for the 2-speed from Penn.
