jmo,
entry level = penn 113H, daiwa slx40shv
mid level = YTS or PG454
upper level = Trini 20 or 40

i have seen captains and deckhands use a daiwa slx40shv with spectra (i'd say 60-80# powerpro) jig up fish very effectively; YFT and albies to 50#.

tuna jigging

For rod- Calstar Graphiter 700H. I and 2 other friends use this rod for jigging tuna at the canyons and cod in MA. It's good for 6 to 12 oz jigs. This rod supports up to 20lbs of drag ( I usually fish around 15lbs of drag)

For reel trinidad 30, trinidad 40, or 600 series newell.

Hope this helps- Albert

tuna jiggin'

I prefer a 7-8' heavy cod rod matched with a 546 newell. I like to use 300 yds of 130# spectra for backing topped of with 60# ande pink or clear mono. I also like to use a 15-20' shot of 80# flourocarbon. I usually fish on a party boat and you will be grateful for the heavier tackle. the longer rod allows you to jig more effectively as well as control your line when the fish takes off under the boat. I've jigged bluefin up to 150lbs. with this outfit. My good friend Pete likes to use the same outfit except instead of the newell he uses a 40 Trinidad. He likes to squid the jig rather than yo-yo it. He's caught more tuna on the jig than anyone i know so i guess it works.
Also, im 6'6" and 250lbs so this outfit is perfect for me but may not be perfect for you.

good luck

Tuna Jigging..............

I also use a Calstar grafighter 700h
with titanium guides. I was using a
Penn 12t cal sheets custom but the reel is high maintanence, so I bought
an Avet 4/0/2 wide. I will have 80lb Izoline spectra backing and 80lb mono.
as for jigs I use glow in the dark iron
up to 12oz for night jigging. and crome
hammered diamonds for day jigging.
