Hey guys I want to start off by saying I think this is a great site loaded with lots of talent and very valuable information!! Great job! So anyways I was wondering how everyone trolls? In other words how do you calculate how fast to go with how much weight you need to get down to a certain debth. Like if I were trolling with an umbrella rigs using an 8 ounce sinker at 3 mph how would I know if I were targeting a school of fish I see at 50 feet deep? Does everyone just do a trial and error thing or do you have a method to the madness?? What is usually an average amount of line to let out?? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all your help.

When trolling umbrellas or parachutes with wire line I let out ten feet of wire for every one foot of water and generally troll at 4mph. ie. If the water is 30ft deep and I want to be 5ft off the bottom I will let out 230ft-250ft of wire.

I only use mono when trolling surface lures.
