What is the proper way to troll for stripers using wire line, specifically, best lures or rigs, speed of boat, marking of wire, amount of wire to deploy, and setting of the reel. Thanks in advance.

Meirowitz,
That's like asking what's the best brand of beer or do you prefer blondes or brunettes. I'm no expert at this, but I have about ten years' experience, and can say that the right lures and techniques vary a good deal according to circumstances. Ask around among the sharpies at your marina or tackle shop to get some notion. Bass generally like a slow troll and will bite on bucktails, parachutes, bunker spoons, deep diver plugs and umbrella rigs, among others. I'm sure if this thread keeps going, you'll get a wealth of information from folks far more experienced than me. Another way to learn a great deal in a short while is to take a trip on a good charter boat in your area and learn from them. Good luck.

Meirowitz, Do a search in the forums for "wire line" or "trolling wire" or just "trolling". There have been volumes written about it already here , and you will probably find answers to questions you wouldn't even think to ask.

Monel vs. Stainless; Dacron vs. Mono

Togmaster, thanks for the reply. What are the advantages (disadvantages) of stainless wire over Monel, and mono backing over dacron. I note that EC had mentioned in another forum that he intended to address this issue.

where to start ...

tough to answer. you need a special rod that can handle the stress of wire and a good reel too. they even make special rods just For bunker spoons. usually a top shot of 300 feet of monel over 40lb mono. wire should be marked so you know how deep u r .5'depth per 100' line any deeper u need to add led trolling sinkers. More wire won't get line any deeper it bends upward. Now trolling is a whole other post.......

A few corrections...

The correct sinking rate for wire is for every 10' of wire it will sink 1'.(100' of wire will sink 10',300' of wire will sink 30')More wire WILL give you more depth however guys usually load their reels up with a top shot of 400' of 40lb stainless or monel on top of mono backing.I prefer monel because it is more forgiving.(less kinks)If I need to go deeper than 40-45 ft I will add a drail sinker before the leader. The leader should be 60-80 lb test with a length of 12-20'.Usually for every 4oz of weight will give you another 5' of depth.A good snap swivel should be added to the end of the leader. It is a must to troll SLOW. Bass like it 2-3 knots, blues will hit 3-5 knots. If you are trolling spoons it is more important to watch the action of the spoons than your tach or speedometer. The rods should have a steady sweeping motion to them. Its also important to check your spoons every now and then for weed and eel grass.A piece of eel grass will stop any bass from touching your spoon. You will have to adjust your speed when you change direction because of the wind/current/chop.Too fast will make your spoons spin.
The rod should have carboloy guides or rollers and a good reel would be a Penn 113H.
When hooked up I put the boat in and out of gear to keep tension on the fish.If you leave it in gear lower the RPM's as slow as it will go.It is not necessary to set the hook and you don't have to pump the fish.I keep the rod at a 10 o'clock position and keep reeling.
Hope this helps.

Another thing...

I forgot to mention rods. Most guys will tell you spoon rods should be long,8-9'. I started years ago with 6 1/2' ST.Croix rods and they were very productive.A few years back I purchased 7' Seeker rods which I find awesome. To get extra spread between your spoons we use rod riggers. They go in your existing rod holders and your rods are in them in the laying down position pointing outward extending your spread approx. 8-12' depending on the length of your rods.Attach safety lines to your reels incase they fall or get pulled out of the holders.

There isn't much to add to what B.Attitude told you in his very detailed post. The only thing I can contribute is that I often use a rig with 40# monel spooled on a Penn 500 Jigmaster for shallower trolling and the 113H with 60# monel for really deep stuff. Good luck.

Thanks for all the help. I think I get the picture on trolling with wire. Most questions answered but may have more as I get my feet wet. Now let the weather subside so I can go outside without getting hammered.

Answer to your question

quote:
Mako Hunter, about a week ago I was at J&H and puchased the same Penn Senator rod and Penn 113H reel spooled with 450 feet of 40 lb Monel (marked the first 100 feet and 50 feet thereafter), backed with 80 lb dacron and fifteen feet of 80 lb. leader. The cost for the entire rig was about $279, but, I was told, $89 of that was for spooling and marking the wire. Harry Fuld, the owner of the place, sold me the gear and quoted the prices.

When I read, on this board, that $79 was considered a lot of money to wire spool a reel, I related some of what I had read here when I was at J&H today and questioned the $89 charge for spooling.

The feedback I got was as follows:

* It was felt that your problem with the wire probably wouldn't have happened had you given the driver instructions to stop, back up, turn and go back, etc.

* If you let out all the wire and were into the dacron, you increased your problems. Had the boat stopped before you reached the dacron, you might have salvaged the situation.

* J&H sells a 300 foot roll of Monel for $29.99. If you load 450 feet of Monel, together with 80 lb dacron backing, plus marking roughly every 50 feet (which you had not mentioned initially), plus leader material, the price, according to them, should be around $79. They feel that stainless is not nearly as good as Monel because stainless is more prone to kinking. They also think it's a tossup between dacron and mono backing.

Shortly after I purchased my wire rig, I sought some tips on trolling with wire. I contacted Togmaster by email and was advised by him to ask my question on the discussion board. So, I posed the question "Trolling With Wire", to which I received a couple of replies which weren't very helpful. Togmaster didn't bother to reply. Ironically, many of my questions were answered in this dialogue.

Thanks

Well Mierowitz Stainless wire or Monel wire is only a matter of opinion. That?s why I use stainless. Monel is a softer wire and easier to work with. But for getting down deep and stronger pulling power stainless is what I use as well as price!
Most pin hookers from the old Rock fish days used stainless. The durability was greater and this makes a big difference when using the rod's every day. The only problem's with stainless is number 1) tend to Rust over time if not properly cleaned. 2) wind back on to the spool has to be watched very closely not to cause a backlash or a kink. If you could avoid these problems and have experience in cranking in fish with out balling up the line then your fine. But if not Then stick to the Monel. The biggest mistake anglers make when using wire is just reeling in the fish and not watching the spool on the reel. I say this because it is very important to guide the wire back on to the spool evenly with out a pile to one side of the reel. This will over time hurt your line whether it be stainless or Monel. Most anglers don?t think about this and that is why stainless is a poor choice for the inexperienced angler. But for those that understand and do evenly spool there lines on the return can use Stainless and get the better durability of wire as well as saving a big load of chase. And mierowitz 79.00 for a spooling is totally out of line. Whether it be Monel or not. Next Dacron backing is not the way to go!!!!! Use 50 Lbs or 60 lbs. Big game or ande. Use a 80 lbs leader to the lures with 20 ft of mono to the swivel.
It?s all a money issue for tackle shops. Monel is bigger bucks but not always needed. Donart in Freeport has a special $19.95 for 400ft of stainless with the markers for the same price. And I bet monel is only a few bucks more. So don?t always believe a good business man Like Harry. Harry has corned the market in many aspects and does have some great deals. But I wouldn?t turn my back on him in a heart beat!!!!!!. When the last time he was out Bass trolling?
And thanks for the great support you gave me as not answering your question in time:( I'm I fired?
