anyone have any idea what the ratio of how many feet of line (mono) would have to be let out to get down 10'20' and so on. I have a 12OZ. trollign drail but have no idea how to tell how deep it's going. I realize it's not going to be exact, but I am just looking for a round about idea.

Don't really know about depth / drail weight / speed of boat / current direction. Rule of thumb for wire and lead core is 1' for every 10 yds of line let out. If you troll alot why not set up an outfit without mono so you have a better idea of where your hooks ride in the water column.

The correct rule of thumb is 10' of wire will make it sink 1'. Example,300 of of wire will sink to 30-35 ft depending on lures and speed. For bass I troll 2-3 knots, for bluefish kick it up a knot or two.Adding drails should be done before the mono leader so it don't affect the action of the lures.
A 4oz drail should make the wire sink an additional 5 ft. /8oz will sink 10ft.
