Hi Al and All,

I was thinking about some of the possible advantages to using braided lines for trolling for stripers in the fall. I have never thought of using braid before because of the shock factor when trolling. However, I figured wire doesn't really stretch that much, and on a fiberglass rod, maybe braid would work. So, would braid be my answer for a substitue for wire, or would I wind up blowing up my rods. Any experiences or thoughts?

Thanks guys,

I was just remembering last November when Steve Byrne was posting that he just trolled with mono and had no problem getting down 40 feet with shad umbrellas. I figured if mono could do it, the thinner diameter braids could do it even easier. I didn't really enjoy trolling wire and would rather fight the fish. I'll have to give it a shot next season. If necessary, I can put a drail in front of it. And of course, keep the drags lighter for the braids.

Now, how about trolling reverse green parachutes around Eatons Neck. If they would get down deep enough, the lighter braided line would make it a lot easier to work the rod.

Hi Capt. Neil,

Up late huh. That is a good point to consider. I have never had that problem, but I have not put the pressures of trolling and a striking fish on my reels. OPINARI stated he has tried this already. Maybe he can clarify the issue.

Thanks

OPINARI,

If we are going to do it that way, how much line and pound test would you use? Do you have any idea what the line length/depth ratio was for the line you were using? I would probably go with 30 pound Power Pro and I would want to be able to get down 40 feet or so. I am sure 150 yards would do it but I don't want to overload it either.
