Can anyone that travels with rods alot recommend a really good rod case to take on the plane?I want the most durable case possible for 7'rods,price doesn't matter.I am also debating if I should take my good rods or have a few cheapies made up just for travel.Does damage occur often to rods during plane trips?

Anyones opinion on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks

I forget their names but there is at least one company that makes insured rod cases so that the cases themselves and the rods inside are insured against damage. My preference is a nice thick PVC pipe with a plastic cap cemented onto the bottom and a rubber quick-release one on the top. I've done quite a bit of traveling this way and never had a problem, though the tube itself is pretty heavy.

I'd go with the PVC also. You could cement an end cap on one end and a connector with a sgrew cap on the other. Put a hasp and a lock on the screw cap and connector to lock it. Add a strap to the tube and you have a case for about $15.00.

rod cases on planes???

A year ago went to Dominican Rep. & brought 2 fly rods. FYI I spoke with AA officials, customs and some NE members (absolutely a great help) about doing just what you're looking to do.

1st. You do have the right to do it. Bring "expensive" reels lures equipment in "Carry On". POLES in cases etc. also. BUT....I mean a big BUT....
The decision is made by the AIRLINES as to what you may bring onto the plane. This was related to me in e-mail & phone conversations with US Customs/Homeland Security. You can find this on the internet easily.

At the airport (again dealing with Am. Airlines) I was told.."it's up to customs/security" to allow Rods in cases onto the plane. I had the print out from US Customs regarding this showing it is allowed and it's determined by the airline. Remember I had two, 2 piece rods in a case. I was advised to speak with Security. I walked over to Security and displayed the paperwork explaining what I wanted to do and what the Airline people were saying. I was told by the Security/Customs supervisor very politely that I was in fact correct BUT it's not going to happen.
The viewpoint on thier side is that if the rod case (or item) is of a size that the case might be utilized as some form of weapon they will not allow that item to be brought on to the plane. It must be checked as baggage. My small bag with 2 (expensive) fly reels with line on each and the flys and leaders were not a problem.

This is the best. Am. Airlines said no problem, check the Rod Case in, but alas I was checking in 2 bags already. Therefore it's a 3rd bag. So how much? $100.00 (one way) for a 3rd bag. Luckily my 2nd bag could be a carry on (it wasn't that big) and the Rod Case was checked in. It arrived with no problems. Just duct tape the ends shut. Again coming home there were no problems.

Point of note is, this was international travel. I don't know if this is the exact same thing as traveling within the US.

Hope this helps you or anyone else attempting the same thing.

Maybe on Piker Fantasy Island you could purchase all that PVC and fittings for $15 :)

Second issue is shape, PVC is ROUND,
which is a good thing for a wheel,
but not so for luggage or cargo being transported by air.

I appreciate the thoughts on pvc and know it works, but I have seen this system fail a couple of times over the years shipping blanks & rods by mail.Just last week Captain Neil showed me a rod he shipped to Florida in pvc that was broken in 1/2 and was packed with plenty of material inside to keep the rod from bouncing around. You could not find anything wrong with the pvc either.

I really want to protect my rods with the best system available.I have hunted in many far destinations and over the years saw many guys jaws drop when there case and rifle stocks came out in more than 1 piece.I have not done much traveling with my rods and know the case I have now isnt going to hold up.

I have a pelican case for my guns wich is virtually undestructable and used by the us military to transport specialized equiptmant.Unfortunatly they dont make rod cases.

HJ and glouster too I will ck out the skb and carmate cases.-Thanks all

Johnny kapula thanks for the info I know it has gotten so tuff to travel since 9/11.The weghts and requiremants on bags have rally changed over the years.I would think there will be a surcharge for a 7'case now.

rod case

Togilator I have the large bazooka tube from plano and have used it three times so far with no problems. Have had as many as 9 rods in it .I usually secure the rods together with velcro straps with soft rags between the rods then wrap the bundle of rods with bubble wrap and slide into the tube.I also marked the tube where the sections telescope so that when I open it at the airport I can easily close and relock it. I hope this helps.

Bazooka Rod Case

I travel to Canada once a year and use a Bazooka Rod case, no issues so far. I start by wrapping the rods in the plastic or cloth bags that the rods come in. Velcro strap the rods in multiple locations. Wrap bubble wrap around the bundle, again in multiple locations, so that the rods are secure inside the case. Both ends of case are packed with bubble wrap so rods can not move.

I duct tape one end and the location where the adjustment lock is attached. I then use an approved TSA lock to lock the case. I use duct tape strips with the words open here and arrows to indicate which end is to be opened if necessary.

The outside of the case takes a beating, but the rods are fine.

Hope this helps.

Bazooka Rod Cases

We have two different size Bazooka cases IN STOCK, if you need to see them.

We also have tried the home made PVC cases and they worked well... excpet once, when it, and the rods it contained, came out off the plane broken. How they managed to break a piece of schedule 40 PVC we'll NEVER know!!

One recommendation we make to our customers using the Bazooka cases... IF you have the room for it, put a small wood dowel or even a 1 x 2 inside, the same length of the rods and it will help keep the case from bending and collapsing. We've padded the wood and tie wraped the rods to the wood.

We don't stock the SKB cases but we've heard good things about them.

Good luck!
