Hey fellas,

I will be taking the family to Montauk for a few days in the beggining of August. I am thinking of pulling my 20ft center console out there to maybe give the Southside fluke a try and maybe drift a few eels for bass in the rips.

I have never done Montauk on my own before and I was wondering what you guys think........piece of cake?.....or forget about it?

Also any tips on where to launch ....store the boat and so on appreciated.

Anthony-

Gone Fishing Marina gets two thumbs-up.

A 20 footer is safe if the wind stays calm. By all means, avoid the point if you've got a wind against tide if the wind is more than 10 to 15mph because the rips can be very hairy.

There is also excellent porgy and sea bass fishing about five miles North and to the West at Gardiner's island.

Although I haven't taken my boat out there yet, I have been to Gone Fishing many times. It's a well run place without the pomp and circumstance that some of the other marinas have. Easy launch with water and gas right at the ramp and plenty of supplies inside. The bar and outdoor restaurant are also a plus.

Doctorfish - I have a 17ft CC and don't think its safe enough for Montauk. Would you take a boat of that size out of the lake? I've seen the fly guys in the fall with similar sized boats around the point. I thought I might be able to work the North side inshore, maybe Shagwong. What do you think?

west lake

I am trailering to Montauk on Friday. I have a 21 Aquasport and it is no problem as long as the wind is down. Use Common sense! Montauk is awesome for many reasons, just be careful.

I usually launch at the town ramp and park the truck and trailer at West lake for 10 bucks. Chris at West lake is a nice guy (no attitude problem) and has fair prices on bait and tackle. Good luck

Porgyman,

I caught my first dormat fluke when I was eight years old on a 1972 18 foot Wellcraft that my father owned. I remember staring at the navy radar tower spinning in front of me on top of the dunes on the beach. I also remember renting 14 foot skiffs with 10 or 15 horsepower outboards and taking those skiffs around the point as well.

But to answer your question, I would have to say that it depends on what make/model 17 footer you have as well as the the type of hull, the deadrise, the age, the horsepower, and your experience level.

For instance, I've been out a few times helping a neighbor who has a 13 foot Boston Whaler. We were out in the sound with a terrible two to three foot chop and boat traffic. The boat handled the seas better than many 18 footers.

Then again, I've been in a 42 foot downeaster that took some serious waves over the bow trying to plow through those rips on an ebbing tide with South winds.

Just use your head and you should do fine.

Doctorfish - I have a 1992 Aquasport Osprey 175 CC (17.5 ft). The deadrise is 12 degrees. The boat weighs about 2000 lbs. and is powered with a '99 100hp Yami 4-stroke. It definitely pounds in rough seas. It's a great bay boat and perfect for where I use it (Western Sound). I've had the boat for 7 yrs and it's the only boat that ever owned.

montauk fishing

If it is a calm day I would make a run to coxes ledge for Codfish. I went there last year during the 2nd week of August and we had cod fish up to 35lbs and few in the 20lb range. We are taking the boat to montauk again this year in August and that is the first place we are heading! A little far to run but worth the trip. Plus you could always dock the boat at Block Island for a couple of days and cut the trip to coxes ledge in half.

Secong the recommendation for Gone fishing, I kept my boats there for over 20 years. MtSinaiMike, don't get caught using that town ramp unless you're an easthampton resident, the fine will be the equivalent of 20 launches at Gone fishing. As far fishing from a samll boat, I've fished out there since 1950 in boats from 14 to 50 feet, just watch the weather and use some common sense.

Oh yea!.....I'm glas I asked you guys......now I'm really getting excited.

My only concern is will three days be enough time to do the bass....the fluke....and I definitley gotta do the porgy/seabass thing.

I hope my wife is in an understanding mood that week.

Gone Fishin

I have put my boat out there for 2 years in a row after labor day and it is a great place. Neat Clean good bait store. The launch ramp does have restrictions on it. Last year they changed it to no pulling boats out after 6 pm I think. I would give them a call to make sure.

I put my boat out there for 2 weeks after Labor Day last year and fished 10 days. Just keep in mind as all the previous post stated to watch the conditions, it does get pretty wild sometimes in that south rip especially with the wind against the tide.

Good luck and have a safe trip.

Thanks

Thanks Bill and everyone else for all the info.
I called and booked a slip at Gone fishing....figured that should be easier than taking her in and out every day.
The rate for my 20ftr was 30 bucks a day....worth it.

Rates for G/F

I did some investigating 2 years ago and gone fishin has the best rates and services available for Montauk. The marina is mamaged well, safe for children, clean and well stocked.

If you fish early till about 11 or 12 and take a rest you can go back out to Shagwond and the birds start working in the afternoon around 4. If the kids want action that will be the area with blues all over the place, just throw a jig and have some fun.

They also serve a great breakfesat at the resturant there.

Good luck and tight lines, catch em up!!
